Matt, 

I am sorry to hear about your fathers fight with lung cancer.  My father died of black lung when I was only 9 years old so I feel your pain.  My thoughts and prayers are with your father and your family.  I pray for a speedy recovery for your father.

Matt, sorry to hear about your father, but people can survive this disease.  My father was diagnosed three years ago, they removed 2/3 of a lung, and got it all.  No chemo, No radiation.

Almost immediately started smoking again, and works part time in a cheap cigarette store...I call him the pusher.

Since it appears to be a slow growning type, I am hoping it is also curable.

 I am an Internist (Medical Doctor) so let me give my input.  you said a lung nodule,  did the initial biopsy prove cancer???   if so there is no need for another biopsy , unless they missed the nodule ( yep it happens) 

give me some details if you dont mind, and do not lose hope yet there are lot of people with nodules that are not cancer, just our body's way of fightng odd things that got to our lungs.

Thanks, at my suggestion my parents have made a September appointment with a Lung Nodule Clinic at a place about three hours drive from their home that has a national reputation in this area for a full diagnostic workup.

So far all the information my brother and I have comes from our parents, and therefore we are not exactly sure what the doctors actually think.  My parents will ask the people at the Lung Nodule Clinic to send a written report directly to me so that my wife and I can learn what in fact the data and differential diagnosis say.  I'm a pharmaceutical researcher and my wife is a medical writer (we both have PHDs in biology, we met in grad school), so once we have the full report from the specialists we can start doing Medline searches and so forth.

Good luck to you and your family, Matt. Hopefully your thread will make someone else on these forums think twice about the habit, allowing a little bit of good to come out of this. (As a former smoker, I know that sometimes it takes a kick in the head to get it to stick.)

However, people should not think lung nodules and/or cancer only happen to smokers: my father never smoked, and a few years ago a good friend who had never smoked died of lung cancer.  Nor should people think cancer is the only risk from smoking: a close relative who smoked heavily died of emphysema recently.  And another good friend who smoked for many years has made it to an advanced age without smoking-related health issues.  So although there are strong correlations they are not 100 percent either way!

Very sorry to hear this Matt. My aunt recently had surgery for slow growing liver tumors and the surgery went well. If they catch it when its small I think the odds are definitely a lot better. Best of luck to your father and your family.
