These stories do, however, highlight the reliance we now place on plastic and magnetic bits to get so much accomplished.

Thats why I collect gold
Not really... but it could be worth something when my lead wrapped computer and short-wave radio finally die and I am forced to leave my bunker in the foothills of the smokey mountains

I did, however, have a lovely encounter with a snide woman today. I went skiing and on the way back I stopped to get some gas. The pump wouldnt take any of my cards, so I thought it was an issue with the pump. I walked inside, gave the lady my card, explained the situation and she swiped the card. She then said, in a whisper, "Im sorry sir, your card is declined... perhaps you forgot to pay your bill?" I gave her what I can only imagine was an awful look. I politely said, no thats not the issue - I then proceeded to give her 2 other cards and surprise, all were "declined." Finally, two other patrons came in in the middle of her telling me that perhaps I am at my limit on all the cards... The other patrons were complaining of the same problem. Turns out, due to the blizzard conditions, their internet was down and couldnt process credit cards.
Yet again, not embarressed - incredibly pissed.
Did you ask if if their internet went down because they forgot to pay their bill?
Anyway, I think the clerk's insinuation was rude. They should know better.
@Anonymous wrote:for example recently I went to a local pizzeria and as most of us do we don't really check if they accept amex ! Meal was done I get the bill pull out the amex and then boom ! "Sir I apologize we don't take american express" for a second I was like ! "Come on ! Your gonna do me like that infront of my fiancé ! " I paid with my discover it , everything was good ! But you guys could mention any embarrassing moments you had trying to pay with a amex ! Or bad moments trying to use a amex !
When I first got my TE and tried using it at the KFC across from my work, I found out that they didn't accept it. I just pulled out my Sony Card Visa and swiped. No embarassment. Many cards aren't accepted at many places.

Rude, yes, But let us take a moment to consider: A clerk in a Quik-Gas-And-Shop... should know how the internet might fail. I'm feeling cognitive dissonance here
Never felt embarassed, just handed over a Visa or MC.

+1 i still hand them PRG first (even though i know they don't take Amex) just for the entertainment factor.
Amex could also level the playing field some by lowering their swipe fee's a bit.

After looking at your card signature ... I'd like to collect your Merrill Lynch Amercian Express (Gold). Nice, went to their website and dug out the requirements and could not even find an app. Seems it is only for an exclusive "Private Client" group. Remember back to around 2006 when Merrill Lynch Cards with the bull on them were the rage for the up and coming. At the time I was serving as a member of a university foundation and worked with students and various people with money and this was the card
