Not understand how amex delta status works.

Hello all.

I may sound really stupid for asking this question, but I don't get how the status for delta works. I apped and received the delta gold card last year, and have been using it as my main card. I travel a lot, and hoped to have reached silver status by the least, but wasn't even close. I traveled wtihin the U.S. almost every two weeks, and still no silver status, so maybe I still don't travel as much...? I don't get it. The whole MQMs and MDMs...I tried looking through their delta site, but am still confused...

How is this stuff calculated exactly anyway?

Re: Not understand how amex delta status works.

The Delta Gold card has nothing whatsoever to do with status. To reach Silver status, you need to fly at least 25000 miles in a calendar year (that's the MQM part) and spend at least $3000 (that's the MQD part). To reach Gold, you need to fly at least 50000 miles and spend at least $6000. If you reach Silver status, the Delta card is basically useless. Among other things, Silver status gives you Zone 1 boarding and free first bag, same as CC.

Re: Not understand how amex delta status works.

This is the part that confused me!!

You said that I have to spend at least $3k. I spent way over that. My card spend on just the card was around 20k and the amount I spent on flights were over 5k...

I presume this travel is all on Delta? Some basic setup questions just to be overly cautious:

1) When you book flights, either through your corporate travel portal or when you book on line, your Delta SkyMiles account is being referenced, correct?

2) The Delta SkyMiles account you are referencing on these tickets is exactly the same Delta SkyMiles account number printed on your Gold Delta SkyMiles AMEX card?

3) If you are traveling every two weeks, that's easily 20 round trips. One of the status options for Silver is 30 segments, so you should at least have gotten that.

4) The 25,000 MQM miles may be a bit more difficult on domestic flights if you are taking short hops often.

5) You should not have to look through the site to see your progress. When you log in to your Delta SkyMiles account, on the first page, in the upper left corner is an immediate progress bar for how you are doing. See below.

6) After all that, even when you get to Silver status.... you won't notice much difference in your Delta experience. This is because the Delta Credit Card already gets you:

6a) First Checked Bag Free - With 20 flights a year you are saving either yourself or your employer something like $1,000 per year in bag fees Smiley Surprised

6b) Priority Boarding (at the same time as all those Silver Medallion members)

6c) Ability to pay to get into a Delta Lounge, same as Silver Medallions.

This is what you should see when you log in to the Delta site, progress bars for the two sets of two options to reach Silver Medallion. You have to get one from the first pair (the airplane icon), and one from the second pair (the $ icon), to get Silver for the next year.

Re: Not understand how amex delta status works.

My credit card is linked to my skymiles number, and I do see the segment list as soon as I am logged in . I also have the delta app that shows my skymiles and my progress. I guess traveling short-distance is what made me unnaplicable. It sucks!! I also pay for comfort seats, and I was told I can get free upgrades if I was a gold member, which is so, so far away.... hahaha... thanks for all the great info though Smiley Happy

Re: Not understand how amex delta status works.

How many total flights did you take in calendar year 2015? The number of times the plane left the ground?

Re: Not understand how amex delta status works.

now the thread is moved to SmorgasBoard where the OP won't find it and reasonable topics sometimes go to die...

This isn't some random topic, it relates to how one uses the Delta card and Delta SkyMiles to good effect, including understanding how a FF number relates to earning and using those miles, and then earning status.
