Short term disability--maternity leave

How long do you typically have to work for a company before you can collect short term disability? I am about 6 months preggo. I have been encouraged to apply for another job that will bring in A LOT more money. I could start the job in August, but would have to leave mid-September (I am due late September).

I would have only worked for the new business, maybe 30 days.

The only other option I see is going without pay for several months once the baby is born which I CANNOT afford to do...

Any advice out there?

Re: Short term disability--maternity leave

I think it would depend on if your employer offers short term disability.

A lot of employers don't make some benefits available to new employees until after 30 days, so maybe not.

Some employers don't even offer short term disability.

Mine does.......$80 a week.....$29.09 after taxes/insurances/other deductions.

Thanks side...and how are you. I have been gone for the forum for awhile. Busy buying a house and preparing for new baby.

Yes, they do offer short term and I would start paying into it immediately. What do you think?

Re: Short term disability--maternity leave

if you are eligible, short term can be as long as and no more as 12 weeks.

Re: Short term disability--maternity leave

Don't know if Michigan has this, but in California if you are required to pay into a state disability insurance plan, then you are entitled to benefits from the state during maternity leave.  If I recall (it's been nearly 5 years since my DW did this), it didn't matter whether you switched jobs so long as you had recently paid for into this program though any employer.  She had to apply for benefits separately from her employer's regular disability/maternity leave program.

Of course, in a few weeks, California is not going to have any money left for support programs like this!
