Wow, I wasn't implying that it was! Just that for once, it wasn't crazed bargain hunters.

Yes Hauling. It was gang related as a matter of fact.
But we're talking the Palm Desert/Palm Springs area of Southern California. So it just goes to show ya that this type of horrendous behavior doesn't just occur on the other side of the tracks...

No worries, Hauling.
It's terrible enough that this incident occurred in the first place.
But to learn that it was, in fact, gang related, and took place
in a very upscale area of SoCal just makes it more disgusting.
Seems like you're not safe anywhere these days.....

The trampling and death of a Walmart employee occured less than five minutes from where I work. Horrified, yes. Shocked, yes. Saddened, yes.
We were doing the first Black Friday "thing" some 60 miles east of home where people were lined up at 5:30AM when we got there. When the doors opened, people were orderly and polite. Laughing, joking, sipping coffee and trading holiday stories in line, I was amazed at how friendly everyone was at an obscene hour of the morning.
Difference? I'm not sure what it is. Having avoided retail establishments between Thanksgiving and Christmas for most of my life, I just don't get it.
We only went because DD had birthday money burning a hole in her pocket and the nano she wanted was priced right. I don't think we'll do it again, especially in the tenor of the nation and the state of the economy that I anticipate not improving for the next couple of years.
I'm sick to my stomach.

Thanks for sharing, atlast.
I thought about you when I first read the Bloomberg article.
I wasn't sure how close you were to the town where the
trampling actually occurred, but I figured you couldn't have
been too far away.
And as tragic as this incident is, I wouldn't worry about
changing your shopping habits. No doubt WalMart is very
saddened and embarrassed over what happened, so they'll
take every precaution to make sure this never happens again.
Besides, if you change your behavior, you give in to the
senseless knuckleheads that caused this to happen. Another
poster on this thread mentioned that CBS News showed a
cellphone video of the incident, and people were standing around
pointing and laughing while the WalMart employee was receiving
CPR prior to being taken to the hospital.
There's really no place in our country for that kind of heartlessness,
apathy and stupidity. And you definitely shouldn't give those folks
the satisfaction by changing your shopping habits....

I watched that cell phone video, and while there certainly shouldn't have been a jovial mood whatsoever, I can unequivocally say that they were not pointing and laughing at the incident. I think that there was someone in the background, who said something, and another lady laughed at it. Very inappropriate, yes. I don't think that the lady was telling jokes or laughing at the poor guy's misfortune, but there should have been a little more solemn attitude about the scene.

Thanks for the correction, Byrdman.
Like you said, people should have been more
somber and respectful. And of course, we're all
very sorry that gentleman passed away after being
transferred to the hospital. I feel badly for his family.

I actually read about this while I was out shopping on Black Friday. It amazes me how people will act in a crowd. And all to save a few dollars? It's absolutely ridiculous!
I always go shopping Black Friday, but never make it at opening time. Last year was the first and only year I waited outside a Target before opening. And it was more for the experience. The line was orderly, free coffee was available, and free reusable Target bags with free things inside were handed out. I can't imagine something like that turning into a free-for-all with human lives at risk, but there you go...It obviously happens.
Here's a followup article in the Wall Street Journal.
It gives the victim's name and points out that WalMart
could have done a better job to prevent this tragedy.
Also, the article discusses measures that Best Buy takes
prior to Black Friday that WalMart might be able to adopt.
