Great Lakes no longer taking cc?

To my surprise, I called to start making regular payments on my student loan with GL and they said they no longer take credit cards as payments (debit cards yes, cc no). I was shocked since that's how I have always made payments in the past...of course paying with cc and getting cash back on the card. They told me they "think" this happened as of January this year (which most probably already know on here and I'm just a "late bloomer" lol). I am not required to make payments at the moment (in school to get my Bachelors now) so haven't made a large payment since December.

So...is this true or did the lady just not know what she was talking about and I should call back and find another rep? (I've had rep's in the past not know about taking a cc and had to call back to find one that did).

If it is true...has anyone found any other ways to save $$ when paying on student loans (like this was with the cash back)? I'm probably reaching but still....saving a few bucks is worth asking.

Re: Great Lakes no longer taking cc?

I've always done auto pay through my checking account but earlier this year I decided to put as much fee-less spend no my cards as possible. I do not have the option to pay with a CC on Great Lakes.

NFCU: $25,000; PenFed Power Cash Rewards: $3,500; PenFed Gold: $2,500; Capital One: $2,300; Nordstrom Visa: $2,000; Credit One: $1,250
Amazon: 800; Kohls: $1,500

Re: Great Lakes no longer taking cc?

I have seen this on other posts as well.  Navient is my servicer and they offer a 0.25% interest rate reduction if you do auto-pay, however if you don't have to make payments y et, I'm not really sure if something like that would work (or if Great Lakes offers it).

Re: Great Lakes no longer taking cc?

Yea, I'm not required to make payments since I'm still in school...but like to throw down large amounts here and there. So, I wouldn't be interested in auto pay.
