Sallie Mae Student Loan

I recently found that I had a 90 day late notice in 2008 with Sallie Mae, It was smack in the middle of a deferrment and perfect account history. I may of screwed up the deferrment process back then. I disputed it and it came back verified.

Has anyone had any luck with Sallie Mae and GW Letters?

Re: Sallie Mae Student Loan

Student loans are one of, if not THE hardest to get goodwilled or adjusted. Student loans companies just don't have any reason to be nice about it. It's one of the few debts that will be with you no matter what (bankruptcy, etc.), so they just ignore the requests and move on.

I have seen 1 post on these message boards in the past 2 years about getting a student loan goodwilled.

Re: Sallie Mae Student Loan

Do you have a 30 and 60 day late to go along with the 90 day late?  Is it a valid late?  If you think you were in deferrment during the time that you received the late, I would recommend calling and speaking with a representative.  Maybe send in paperwork to them to show that your loans were deferred.  It is possible they made a mistake, and if so, they will clean it up.

However, if you have a 30 & 60 day late to go along with the 90, then it's less likely that it was actually a mistake on the part of Sallie Mae.  Like another poster said, goodwills to student loan companies are some of the hardest to receive, but your experience may vary.  It doesn't hurt to try.

Re: Sallie Mae Student Loan

It' weird because it says december of 07' "ok", January of 08' 90 days late, February of 08' "ok"... how can that be?

Re: Sallie Mae Student Loan

At least you only have a 90 and not a 30 & 60 additionally, so that is a little bit better on your credit. So, that means only one mark to work on getting off. My SL provider had given me 90's and 120's x 7 accounts. I got the 120's off right away, but it took over a year to get the 90's off.  My circumstances were pretty bad, but they would not relent. I had written the CEO who passed my email to the VP. Nothing worked, tried again after a few months. Tried 3 times. Still nothing.

UNTIL I was in such dispair that I considered giving up on it all and letting them go into default, since I had heard that at the end of the program they would remove the lates.  I called the SL provider and told them I was considering defaulting, so that at the end of the year the lates would be removed, elsewise it would be 5 more years until they would be removed. She replied, I can help you with that! And she did! I cried while on the phone, sobbing, saying do you know how hard I tried and how long I have waited, thank you, thank you, thank you, oh and thank you, sob sob. That was the best CR removal I ever received.

So, either it was because I was considering defaulting, or because a year had passed with no lates (3 payments and unemployment deferrment for 9 months).

The problem with 90 day lates is they carry the weight for 7 years and there is no hope. With 60's I think it is for 4 years, maybe, then they don't have as much impact.    Check the credit in the news section for an article about lates. It was last year sometime, I believe.  Good luck!
