Student Loans - Defaults and Delinquents - Fixing it

So I am now in recovery after 1.5+ years of financial unmanagability.  I found this forum searching for ways to improve my credit score.  Now from what I understand, once it hits default, paying the loan in full without and agreement to remove the negative report from my credit record, is the same as still having it outstanding.  As it will be there for 7 years.

Now I have several loans that are late, and 2 that have defaulted. But I am starting to make progress on my payments, as it does help? Right? One of which I need to dispute, as the same one was reported twice.

What can I do?  I am from Minnesota.  I called the department of higher education to see if once i paid it in full, if the default report would be removed. and she gave me the it will be reported as paid, but it will be there for 7 years.  I will check this often, thanks in advance.
