Trying to Build Credit

My fiancee is trying to build his credit and is having trouble getting accepted for a credit card.  He has been denied multiple time and is now considering other options.   Would taking out a student loan in his name help his credit score/history?  I'm sure it's not the same as getting a CC, but could 6 months of having a student loan/personal loan help him get approved for a CC in say 6 months?

TIA!

ETA: I'm not taking the loan out for him...he will be applying for the loan/it will be only in his name.  I was just wondering if he accepts the Fed. loans that he's approved for, would this help him 6 mos to one year from now when he wants to apply for a CC.  He currently has only one account on his credit report which is a CC he's an authorized user on.

Re: Trying to Build Credit

You can cosign on a loan but you cannot take one out in there name.

Better option...federal loans are not credit based and they will help build credit.
