Authorized User

[ Edited ]
As an authorized user on 3 of my wife's revolving accounts, her balances add to my overall revolving balance and it affects my score.

What would have a better affect on my score; removing me as an authorized user on those accounts, or paying off those 3 accounts?

I'd rather just be removed as an AU, but I don't want to take a hit on my score.  All 3 accounts are in good standing, they're just carrying a balance.

Thanks!

While either paying or removing these authorized user accounts could improve your score, you may want to pay off the accounts entirely if you can, since by doing so you also could be helping your wife's score.

In a much more productive past life I served as FICO consumer affairs manager and myFICO Forums community manager from 2007 to 2012. Now semi-retired, I write the weekly Speaking of Credit column for CreditCards.com.

myFICO is the consumer division of FICO. Since its introduction 20 years ago, the FICO® Score has become a global standard for measuring credit risk in the banking, mortgage, credit card, auto and retail industries. 90 of the top 100 largest U.S. financial institutions use the FICO Score to make consumer credit decisions.
