Get any negative you can off, and if you don't have any installment loans outstanding (mortgage, auto, student loan, or personal loan) do the share secured loan trick that CreditGuyInDixie wrote up a good piece on.
FICO really isn't that big of a mystery when we're talking generalizations: never miss a payment, establish enough positive history early, and then get any negatives resolved or aged off and that's sort of the ball game. Everytning else is pretty straight forward, don't rack up any significant CC debt you don't have to as you alluded to, and end of the day finances > FICO and that's really about it.
