Closing CCs - comments from Chase

I had a great chat with a Chase-United CC rep today
One interesting story she related - she and DH applied for a mortgage and were told they had too many old CCs (unused) available to them.  She then closed a bunch, and her score dropped - NOT due to utilzation!  Mortgage rep said he had seen it before, when more than 2 cards were closed in 6 months.  He said she should have closed two and dropped the CL on some of the unused cards.
So not even Chase CC reps know all the tweaks to FICO.
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid
