Does getting a new credit card for security purposes affect my score?

My credit card number was stolen. So I called my credit card company. They said they would send me a new card with a new number. Does this usually involve closing the existing account and opening another? Will an account closure and a new account appear on my credit report?

You need to ensure that they will keep your old history, else it could negatively affect you yes.

Usually the new card (call to make sure), will report the history of the old card. Many times the lost/stolen card is reported as well as a closed account that figures into your average age for the next 3 years. This duplication will likely not hurt your score much, and may even help it slightly if it is one of your older accounts.
