Sometimes you gain points while something is in dispute, if it's recent enough or truly bad enough. If it's an older account, with an older baddie, the badness might now be hurting less than the age is helping.
Sometimes when an old closed account is disputed, the creditor will simply drop the account entirely. If your score went down during the dispute, that's actually a pretty good indication that if you win and the whole account is dumped, your real score will go down. But it's always good in the long run to get the junk off your report.
