FICO contradicts itself on length of credit history

My length of credit history in one place is listed as "very good" on my FICO report but in the "What's hurting your FICO score" section it says I have a short credit history.

The average age of my accounts is 12 years and my oldest account is 19 years.

How do I get them to fix this inconsistency?

You can't. And I wouldn't worry about it. The comment on your short credit history might simply reflect recent credit. Have you asked for any within the last year?

There is nothing to fix.

It just means that as your report went through the algorithm that there was one spot where you gained points for having longer history compared to the others and another place where you lost points for being shorter than that group.

That is a bit unusual for both of those to end up in the top 4 reasons each direction.

Thanks for the help, folks. To answer your question, I have not applied for credit anywhere for some time (well over a year). In fact, my "amount of new credit" section is rated "great."

You don't say what your score is.  As scores rise the system scrambles to provide something as a negative.  As others have said, the negative they list probably isn't doing much to you it's just that they have to say something is negative.  If this is the worst they can say you're probably in good shape.
