FICO score difference

I checked my FICO scores and my middle one was 733. When I applied for a cash out refi, my credit union said my  middle score was 663 because they use a different model.  They said I need at least 680 for a refi. I don't understand how there can be such a difference. Why bother checking what my score is, if that's not what the bank uses.

Hello and welcome.

It sounds like you bought "credit scores" somewhere but they are not FICO credit scores. Where did you get your scores? No one has been able to buy their own Experian FICO score since February of 2009. Creditors can pull Experian and also there is a CU in Pennsylvania that supplies that information to it's members only. You can only buy true FICO scores at a few places. One place is here at myFICO. I suggest you do an internet search for "myfico discount codes" to save a little money. You can also purchase your Transunion score at www.transunioncs.com. At www.equifax.com EQ will still sell you an EQ FICO score but they make it very hard to find.

If there is that much difference between the score you bought and what the lender pulled it could be you bought what are called VantageScores. The scoring range for VS is 501-990 while FICO scores range from 300-850.

The scores you buy from Experian are called Plus scores and unfortunately cannot be compared to FICO scores in any way. The score you got from your lender is accurate.

Re: FICO score difference

I would just add that some of  the advice that the FAKO score providers offer to improve your score may actually have the oposite effect on your FICO score.

Very good point and one I often fail to mention.
