How does settling a closed account affect your scores?

Hi,

We have been making payments on a closed credit card for a few years. We are in the process of selling our home and want to pay this old credit card.

If we offer them a settlement amount that is less than owed, will this negatively affect our scores as the account was already closed some years ago?

Our credit scores have been climbing back up and don't want to blow it as we are hoping to buy another home soon.  Please advise. Thanks so much.
