i got a call from my bank today and they are removing the inquiry.  I had to write them a letter and send copy of credit report showing inquiry.
Needless to say i am pleased and hope this helps anyone with same problem.

Did you also ask them for 1K for violating the law.

I got a score alert that my EQ had dropped 15 points. After pulling myself together, I read the alert, and the second half had this:
Changes to your credit report

Your FICO® score went down on a day when there were no credit alerts on your Equifax Credit Report™. This can happen if:

* There was a change on your credit report that lowered your score but did not trigger an alert. For example, the balance on an account might have increased enough to lower your score, but not enough to trigger a balance increase alert.
* You moved from one category of credit users to another as time passed. For example, you may have transitioned from the category "consumers with a new credit history" to the category "consumers with a two- to five-year credit history". As a result, your credit report is evaluated differently, causing a slight change in your score. The good news is that moving between categories like this usually offers you the potential to reach a higher FICO® score in the future.
The first did not happen --there was nothing that would have triggered a score decrease; if anything, I would have expected an increase.

I feel so Special!

Re: Inquiry for opening a checking account?

I'm definitely going to send some letters requesting inquiries get removed.  My credit union has about five inquiries over the past year, of which two are valid.  And Bank of America just for opening a checking account.  I'm getting down to business!

Re: Inquiry for opening a checking account?

Flagstar bank did a hard one on me just for opening a checking account.  The good news is that it looks like Flagstar only pings TU.  The bad news is that when I called TU to complain, they said I had to get a "deletion letter" from Flagstar first.  So I called Flagstar and the lady on the phone told me straight out that "you're the first in 6 years since I've been doing this that has ever called about this issue.  It's the Patriot Act.  All banks have to do this and you signed it as well (probably buried deep within the fine print..shame on me)."  But I told her that I wasn't applying for credit, since that is how TU interpreted it and she said she will look into it and get back to me (I'm not holding my breath).  Personally, I don't think my score with TU has been affected much (maybe a point or 2) because it is within 20 points of the other two credit bureaus and is actually higher than EQ.  Still, it chaps me to no end...

Re: Inquiry for opening a checking account?

Wish I had known about this site when this topic was hot and heavy. Many of the programs that the banks use to open checking accounts have the CR pulling as an automatic step in the account opening process, without the ability to override. Patriot Act my foot. Banks have been getting crazier and crazier over the years.

When I graduated from college in '93 and went to work for Firstar Bank (now US Bank), the account opening process consisted of calling ChexSystems on new customers opening checking accounts only. Then, it went to calling Chex for any customer opening a new checking (new or old). Several years ago, the CRs entered the picture (before PA) and it was an optional thing (at least at the banks I where worked). Suddenly, it was built into the program.

I totally agree with Fused and used to argue it all the time. The bank in no way, shape or form has PP to open a stinkin' checking account. I initially saw it as a potential liability for the bank, as there was not a consistent manner in which it was done (insert your own thought or opinion here). To my knowledge (admittedly, I haven't read the entire PA), the PA is to prevent ID theft and to know the customer. Pulling my CR doesn't let the PB ID me. What if someone stole Identification and got a govt issued ID card and knew my SSN, how would that allow the bank to know me, identify me? I'm rambling.

It just seems that we are losing more freedoms with the CR pulling. I haven't flown in awhile, but I heard that you will have to have your credit pulled to fly? Is that an urban legend or some form of truth?

Re: Inquiry for opening a checking account?

I flew home for Thanksgiving and there is no hard pull on any of my CR.  I would say that it is Urban legened not to mention a stupid one at that.

I was a victem of Wachovia when I opend a checking account and they did a hard TU pull one me.  The one dollar  I keep in the account with no intent to ever add another dime to it makes us even or it will so next August.

If they do a hard pull, the bank should at least try to pre-approve us for their credit card.

Re: Inquiry for opening a checking account?

At the bank I work, if a customer qualifies for a credit card based on their credit score pulled at the account opening, we will offer them the preapproved credit card.
