Also if you leave a 1% balance on 2 cards you will again see a drop in your FICO. For some reason the algorithm does not like balances on multiple cards. I think it looks as if you are living off your cards. All this for 800 + fico people. If you leave 2 of 3 balances and need to and in 700 range that's fine but it will be hard to ever see 800 +. I never thought I would see it without a mortgage but I've dotted in and out of 800 now a couple of months. Missed a 3.00 balace on a card last month gave me 2 balances on 2 cards dropped me out of 800. It was just 3.00 pending that posted after I had made full payment on that card.
for the record, my scores right now (807, 832) are with 3-4 of my cards reporting balances each month (and they've been in that range for several months now). i know usually having only 1 reporting maximizes your score so i could probably get higher, just haven't been bothering because it's memoryless. but wanted to comment that you can get into the 800s with multiple cards reporting.
(also i don't have a mortgage. credit cards + closed auto loan + several open student loans. my credit history starts in '09.)
I now have TWO scores over 800! This happened a few months back, yet I still have my TU score just over 760...odd, but I certainly can't complain!
My TU is 765 , my EXP is not too far behind @ 758..so that's good.
EQ however is my truant stepchild ...seems to be stuck in the 730's. I'm currently gardening so we'll see what the next 6 months bring
Given this month's developments, I am leaning even more towards canceling those air miles cards, especailly now that I put almost all my charges on Citi's double cash back card. That one should give me between $1,000 and $1,500 back this year, and no charge for it!
On the other hand, I incurred one $4,000 charge too late in the month, and could not pay it off before the closing date. Score dropped from 790 to 714. I can't wait to see what happens January first. All my accounts are zeroed except for one, with a $3.00 balance. Even so, I don't have much confidence that my score will rebound at anything like the rate it dropped.
Wish there were some way to get FICO to consider carry-over balances instead of just month-end balances. I have not paid a dime in interest or finance charges in twenty years, but that counts for nothing. All they seem to care about is statement balance, never mind that they are all PIF every month.
Hope to be back by spring. Will post again if and when my score ever recovers.

I'm jealous. I can't seem to get there. My EX Bankcard FICO is at 851, but I can't get the others to move and now I'm refinancing my house to 15 yr and lower interest. Thus, I know it'll be a while. I feel like I should be singing the song "To Dream the impossible Dream. . . "
