paid off a credit card and my score went down

Still confused thought lowering balance helped did not hurt. As soon as CU account reported zero balance my score took a 9 point hit

Re: paid off a credit card and my score went down

There are lots of threads around here that make the point that having a small reported balance on one CC is better for scoring than literally having $0 balances across the board.

In my case, I lose around 10 points when all reported balances are $0.

Paid or unpaid, derogs are scored the same.  The only way to have you score increased is to write GW letters and ask that the derog is deleted.

GW = Goodwill letter

Samples: http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Rebuilding-Your-Credit/GW-letter-Q-amp-A-Examples-and-GW-Success-Sto...

Rebuilding Your Credit forum has a lot more examples and strategies / stories for individual lenders, worth searching there for your individual derogatories.
