Re: My Last Words to US Bank Kroger 123 Card

What’s hilarious is the number of posts containing an incredible level of vitriol if a credit card company doesn’t cater to someone’s whims.

If the card company erroneously charged a $10 fee, we would have been subjected to a minimum 1,000 posts detailing BBB complaints, executive office emails/calls/smoke signals, etc., and quite possibly demands for the CEO’s first born son.

But in this case, the credit card company followed the terms of their agreement, and because of this, they are accused of being “loan sharks”.

Using a credit card to make a deposit IS a cash advance – this is pretty standard stuff.  If the card in question had not had any usage in quite a while, well, we recently had a thread in which folks discussed (at some points with an inordinately weird level of detail) small charges they make to keep cards active.

Two parties agreed to terms – but apparently, one should follow all terms to the letter at all times (and be willing to fork over free money “just cuz”), and the other should be free to pick and choose which conditions and provisions they will abide by, when they want to abide by them (even when it comes to eligibility).

I respectfully disagree with DI's conclusion on what constituted the best reaction/course of action following the cash advance fee.

First, I can sympathize. I've learned some aspects about credit the hard way such as a few years ago when I made purchases to a credit card which had a balance transfer on it; I was shocked to learn that banks apply payments to the balance with the lower APR instead of to the balance with the purchase APR.

But what happened to you is not a unique situation. I learned about it awhile ago in this thread at another forum; google search for "The Ultimate USAA Bank Thread, version 2.0, updated 4/18/07"

It was in either that thread or the version 1.0 thread that people compared notes and found out that deposits into USAA from lots of different issuers of credit cards incurred a cash advance fee.

And in another thread (link) I found out that even doing a deposit into USAA from another brand of checking account via a "debit card cash advance" can incur a fee; stef37 said she "was charged an 'out of network'  ATM network fee of $5 from Chase for using my DEBIT card"

Third, I that closing your Kroger credit card closed an opportunity. Suppose that your other cards are occupied with a balance or a balance transfer or a high APR but your Kroger was not being used. And suppose you find yourself needing cash in your USAA checking account for some emergency. Such was the type of predicament I had found myself in --- on the payment due date, Citibank hadn't yet received my mailed in payment and I didn't have enough quite enough cash just yet in my USAA checking account to make a payment. I then deposited cash into the USAA checking account via a cash advance from another credit card and then made a same day online payment to Citibank from out of the USAA checking account.

Thanks for your post.  I do not carry balances on any of my cards or do cash advances.   Albeit, sometimes I' ll let a balance report while the card enjoys a 0% teaser rate.

If I need cash in my USAA  Checking account, I have overdraft protection.   My USAA Rate Advantage MC is linked to my checking account and I have a USAA Savings to turn to.

Re: My Last Words to US Bank Kroger 123 Card

Guys, I said in my an earlier post it was my fault and will not push the issue.  We live and we learn.    The Kroger account did not get closed because of that one incident.  I had already planned to close the Kroger card.  I mentioned that in a thread asking what cards to close.  Thanks for the comments.

Re: My Last Words to US Bank Kroger 123 Card

Wowee, people here can get way too analytical and  too serious sometimes, too.  She said early on (right after I said, "DI, don't you know how this works?") that she realized it was her own mistake, or lack of forethought to blame.  And she probably didn't expect a reversal of a fee but would have liked it - I've had fees reversed just by asking, too - not often, but once in a great while.  (I'm very sure I've had more fees reversed than paid because I'm just that careful and rarely generate fees, but I also hate paying them when I do **bleep** up. Occasionally I realize I just have to eat the fee and don't even request clemency, but sometimes I do ask, and I might get annoyed at the "no" answer, especially since I typically have an otherwise spotless record with all companies.)

I'm sure she had longstanding contributing reasons to being "done" with the card, and that last one was just the last straw.  A similar example:  I put up with and have a great relationship with several companies I consider "loan shark" companies.  They haven't done anything "unfair" to me other than charging me way too much interest.   If/when they try to nickle and dime me, even if it's because of my own doing, and if I am in a position to move on, I'll be glad to do so.  I'll part ways eventually, either in a friendly manner or with some parting words, from GE Money Bank and Merrick sooner or later.  HSBC may or may not be in for the long haul  with me.

Re: My Last Words to US Bank Kroger 123 Card

In my experience all banks' credit cards have cash advance fee and most CUs' credit cards do not have CA fees.

I pay my FKFCU credit card bill using my other credit cards and Citi charged me with CA fees, asked them to waive it, they refused and were absolutely right (I got a lesson for $10 only - pretty cheap), but immedeatly gave mE $750 of CLI. I have paid my FKFCU bill using my Addison Avenue card (an additional 1% cash back) no CA fees.

As for US Bank, I am not happy with them either and would close my Bed Bath and Beyond MC, but DW does not allow me.

Which CU credit cards have no cash advance fees?

Even so, there is cash advance APR and grace period does not apply to cash advance.

Regardless, if you are not going to use that card, why keep it?
