this is a backdoor application i suspect. apparently you don't need to be a checking account customer. it could be that recently this is the case as rumor has it they are selling off their banks.

Another data point to add --

I have just received essentially the same letter as Ron. I have the HSBC Cash or Fly Mastercard. The letter was dated April 6th and the card number and card design is exactly the same as before. No mention of Cap1 in the letter or on the card. I also have a savings and checking account with them, but not a premier level account.
