With Capital One, you can ask if you want the lender to approve a charge that exceeds your limit, mostly to prevent embarrassment at the checkout counter if the card is denied. I opted in for this but never intend on using it. The lender advises that if they do approve an over the limit charge, that $X fee will be charged to the consumer.
