Banks and credit-card companies are giving out record rewards to people who sign up for their cards as competition for well-heeled customers reaches a fevered pitch.

Credit bureau Experian says it is getting more requests from banks seeking to calculate the amount individual consumers have charged in the past year in order to identify high spenders who might be good candidates for new card offers.
