Wish I could offer you more concrete advice.  I know little about this.  But yes, you can rebuild your credit although it has to absolutely hurt that you even have to do so.  Have you pressed charges against these people and/or filed a civil suit.  I would believe that you would win perhaps this will help budge the creditors.  I am just grasping at straws here.  Good luck with it!
