National Protect Your Identity Week Is October 17-23

You know you’re special, right? Easily one in a million. If you have been a victim of identity theft, you’re one in at least 10 million. That’s how many consumers were affected by ID theft last year alone.

It’s surprisingly easy to protect yourself from ID theft once you know what to do. I strongly recommend the information and tips in myFICO’s 16 page booklet Identity Theft and You.

For National Protect Your Identity Week, myFICO has also teamed up with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), Better Business Bureaus (BBB), and dozens of other national organizations. Check out their consumer web site with information on identity theft awareness and prevention so you can:

  • Assess your own risk of identity theft by taking a quick quiz
  • Learn how to protect your identity in many situations such as social networking, using ATMs, paying bills, going on vacation, applying for a job, and recycling an old cell phone or computer
  • Play educational games to learn about ID theft
  • Find out what you should do if you may be a victim of identity theft

Community events are also being held across the nation during October 17-23. Find an event near you for activities such as educational workshops, credit report reviews and the shredding of documents, all free of charge and open to the public. Hear professional speakers and experts on ID theft prevention and recovery.

Identity theft is an impersonal crime that harms victims in deeply personal ways. I encourage you to take advantage of National Protect Your Identity Week to help make sure you never become a victim.
