I am kind of cursious how did they determine my CL.

Congrats! As to how you were approved with no SSN# is beyond my knowledge. As to how CLs are determined many of the posters on this site wonder?!

Do you have a Tin number or something, I forget what it's actually called sorry... that you put in place of the ss on the credit card app?

Although this is unique, may not be unheard of. The USA Patriot Act requires that credit card issuers verify one's identity. SSN is the main way to do so..

Here is what it says...

"To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account. "

This is the information that is required..

"(a) US Citizen: taxpayer identification number (social security number or employee identification number), or (b) Non-US Citizen: taxpayer identification number, passport number, and country of issuance, alien identification card number, or government- issued identification showing nationality, residence, and a photograph of you. You may also need to show your driver's license or other identifying documents. "

All online applications require an SSN (at least the ones I've seen). If you open the account in the branch, it may be different, maybe!

To answer your question, what ever number you provided in place of the SSN (TIN, Alien Registration number etc) is what your credit history will be attached to. Currently no history so you received starter student cards. Suspect as your accounts age you will be able to get higher limits.

I don't have a ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).

I applied the Citi card when I opened a checking account with them.

They asked for my apartment lease, passport and I-20 (a school document that prove my legal status).

BofA only asked for my Califronia DL and BofA debit card.

They did inform me that I need/can document my SSN with them after I get one, so that my credit record can be reported.

it's base on your passport. I-20 is to verify you are legally staying in US. not sure if your credit can be build on top of passport as I have yet to see a credit report attach to passport. also, I wonder how you would retrieve your credit report without SSN

I guess I cannot retrieve it myself, but according to some one who have sucessfully applied 7 cards without SSN, the agencies are able to "hard pull" credit records from Experian. There are records in their system even though no SSN has been issued.
