Capital One credit steps CLI from a $500 to a measly $750

Just checked online and after my 6th statement with ontime payments, paying more than minimum and NEVER going over my credit limit, they increase my credit card only $250. My sister got the same card, just a week before me witht thhe same credit limit and just got a CLI 5X the amount, so that put her at $2,500 CLI.

Why is that? I though I'd least get 2X the amount.

Because they suck? :-D I kid. Really I couldnt tell you. Experience seems to vary but from what ive read they like to see heavy usage which is a bit annoying to accomplish when you have a low limit. Thinking of closing this card next month. For you, id suggest trying a CLI via their FB or contacting the EO office. A few have had success that way. If you'd like the info PM me. Good luck!

Cap1 really loves to see usage. It also helps to have another credit card with a higher limit than the Cap1 CL. They seem to be quite competitive to a certain extent.

I have heavy usage on my capital One and I have a Barclay's card that has $1,800 Credit Limit on it.

Do you pay in full? I got a 2000 cli after 6 months with Cap1 but I paid in full every month, ran on avg 600 thru it a month. I don't know that paying in full makes a difference with them or not but that was my experience with them.

No, I carry a balance.

I read somewhere that they already have a pre-determined amount they will approve you for after 6 months when you first sign up with their card.

The same thing happened to me. I used the card pretty heavy and PIF every month, and only received the promised $250 increase to $750. It's disapointing especially when you see so many others posting they received much more than what was originally promised. There's always hope for the 1 year mark. :-)

I know. I'd like to know how they figure out who will receive a $250 CLI and who will receive a $2000 CLI.

I agree. I got 2500 increase. Used 500-700 month. Just paid multiple times each month. Never paid close to minimum. 3-4 times that. But if you paid little more maybe reason. But. They will come back to you at 9 month point. Good luck.

Congrats on CLI. Any progress in the right direction is good.

As for why they made that decision, we need a bit more info on your usage. You could be carrying a balance on your CC that's 90% of your CL and paying $5 more than the minimum and still fit the description you've laid out. In that situation, I would say you aren't making good use of the card. Could you give us more info? We might be able to give more insight.

My brother opened the QS1 with 500$ limit a month before me and at the 6th statement, his increased to 5k. I got approved for 3k and my 6th statements cut today and now my limit is at 5k. I was expecting more.

I got my QS1 card Sept 2013 with a $500 limit. Then they gave me an auto CLI of $250 in February. In August the day after the new statement I requested an increase. I was automatically approved for an increase taking me to $1,750. Looking forward to January or February to see what increase I can get.

From my experience:

DW got Platinum card back in Nov, $300 limit. After 6 mo, auto CLI to $500. She always kept high balance and only paid minimum until the last 2 months and then she paid about $100 per month.

I got the QS1 in Jan. $500 starting limit. First month, maxed out carried high balance for first couple of months. Last 4 months....would max and PIF twice a month. On my 7th statement....auto CLI to $1500. But I have read of a few here getting much more than that.....jumping from $500-750 to $2500-3000 range.

Yeah, I guess it's just different for every person. When I initially got my card my limit was $500 as well. I received an email about credit steps saying they would increase my limit to $750 if I use my card and never miss a payment within the first 5 months. I did all that and to my surprise, yesterday they increased my limit to $2500 as well. I was discouraged at first when I got the email about increasing it from $500 to $750 but I guess that might be some type of automated email. I payed my balance in full EVERY month so I don't know if that had something to do with it, but I am very please that they increased it to $2500.

My advice to someone would be to do what I did. I never spent more than half of the card so I never passed $250. I also payed the balance in full each month, so I never carried a balance or payed interest. I also payed my bill before the due date. If you do this then maybe you will get the same results, hopefully!

From reading the Cap1 website; they take everything into consideration; payment history; usage; credit report; etc...however did they promised you $250?
My credit steps on my Sony says $500 and that's what I'm expecting...if they give me more it's ok because I hit the luv button and got an extra $1250

+1 I agree with that. When i got my first cap one card. it was $500. After 6 months they raised it to 3k. But only after they say i had gotten several other cards at that point.
