Well, against my better judgement, still in the clouds about my CSP approval. I went ahead and applied for a Sallie Mae World MC.

I figured with only one Inquiry on my TU, i'd be safe enough seeing as they're INQ sensitive.

Got the "App received and undergoing further review" message and figured i'd call in to Recon.

Recon attempt #1: -- DENIAL!

Nice lady came on the line, standard income verification, asked about my 6 1/2yr old C/O's, complimented me on my last 5yrs of 100% payment history, didn't bring up the medical collections, She then proceeded to tell me in no uncertain terms that 5 years penance wasn't good enough for them to approve today. I thanked her for her time and hung up.

Recon attempt #2: -- DENIAL!

Southern sounding gentleman came on the line, standard income verification, went straight for the 6 1/2yr old C/O's, also noted my stellar record for the last 5 years, brought up something about a collection (probably the medical), but didn't state what type. He then went into the spiel about how he felt that at this time I was not a prime candidate for their card. I got cocky and brought up my recent Prime card approvals, and how a prime bank such as them (lol), should take that into consideration. He stated he recognized that fact, but that their standards are higher when issuing credit, and that i'm welcome to try again when i take care of those C/O's. (Or time does) I thanked him for his time as well and hung up.

Recon attempt #3 -- DENIAL!

Recon attempt #4 -- APPROVAL!

I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like Barclay's Recon team has heard every "excuse" under the sun, and seems to have an answer for everything.

I am sure Barclay's recon has probably heard every explanation under the sun. I was suprised I got approved and more so got an incredible recon CLI as well from my initial limit with some issues on my credit report. Then I read others that only have like 1 little baddie on there reports, similiar scores, etc. just flat out get denied and try to recon X amt of times to no success. I have no clue what they look for? Obviously utilization, what other cards are probably in your mix and if they would be utilized I am guessing and obviously income, etc. On flip side I applied for an amex green a few weeks ago, six figures income and I mentioned a few badies and got rejected. I have seen people with alot lower scores get approved, so once again amex being in this case most likely didn't like the baddies I still have and they don't want me currently. Anyways, just rambling.

Reading this makes my approval quite surprising given that I have one 30-day late (March 2012) on a card I don't use and at the time of app reported 70% UTL on my Amex card. I guess wait and try again would be the best option

Good luck.

I dove blindfolded into a pool which I wasn't sure was full or not when I apped for this card. I figured for the cost of one INQ when I only had one other on my TU, It would be worth a shot. What if i'd been Instapproved?

I wasn't expecting a miracle from Barclay's Recon department. No one knows my checkered past better than I do, and in fact almost had a glimmer of hope when I saw i wasn't denied off the bat. I tried twice, and will probably go for a third time if I see anymore advice.

The C/O's are so close to dropping off my reports that there's no point in doing anything with them at this time, not to mention the fact they've ceased collection activity on it over 2 years ago when the SOL ran out.

Recon attempt #3: Got another Male analyst on the line, standard income verification, asked about the 6 1/2yr old C/O's and after explaining he seemed to understand why they were there. (sympathy? maybe this is going somewhere..) No mention of the medical collections, Then came the death blow, my new approvals (5 in the last 2 months.)

He really sounded like he wanted to give me an approval until he whipped out the new accounts spiel. He says they want to see some history with the new accounts, and to try them again when the C/O's go away. I thanked him for his straightforwardness and time and hung up.

It seems to be confirmed that they do in fact take notes, which the next rep reads. HUCA does not work with Barclay's.

I gave them 4 months worth and tried again with a completely different outcome (instant approval) but with Barclay's it's always almost a luck of the draw just which way they might turn.

I would offer the advice to try them again in some months ahead if you really want a particular card such as the Sallie Mae and it can be possible next time will be the charm. Best of Luck next go 'round if you do and nice effort on this Recon anyway.

I have to say, while I've read a million posts that Barclays is INQ and new account sensitive, they approved my Arrival+ on recon with 8 INQs and 7 new accounts - all since July, 5 of them since September. Those "issues" weren't even their concern in giving me the "7-10 day" review message. Rather, it was my lates in summer 2008.

I think they care a lot more about "baddies" than looking for/getting new credit. So, I'm not surprised they're not okay with the C/Os.

So i'm not heartbroken. I still have spend to meet on the CSP and SWA.

If i can say anything positive came out of this, It's knowing where I stand with Barclay's, so I'll be holding off on the Arrival+ and SM WMC again till I can get those C/O's to disappear. Maybe this time next year we'll get instapproved.
