Successful Amex Backdate!!

So I chatted with a rep online today and asked, "can I have my new card updated to show my orginal membership date?"

Told him it was somewhere in between 1989 when I started getting cards and 1996 where I had some trouble. He comes back and says, "I see you here in 1995. Do you want our team to look back further?" I say, 1995 is most likely right.

Three hours later I get an email that says Card Replacement Notification. So, I log in. BAM! There it was changed.

But I was a little astounded, "Card Member Since 1989" WTH? I'm sure that's wrong but I'll take it!! Even if I feel a little dirty right now.

Congrats on the backdate! You will see a big increase off of that. My wife plans on doing this next month. We're going to bring all of her balances to 0 and then apply for an AMEX and request a backdate.

Congratulations! Thanks for sharing! I had an Amex that I burned back in 2000. I'll have to remember this backdate option whenever I get the nerve (and scores) to apply for another card in the future.

I'm picking up all kinds of interesting tips on this forum. Saw the reference to "AMEX Backdate" on another thread. Called to check on my first cards, I'm pretty sure I had a regular AMEX Gold card in the mid-1980's before I got married and my then (now ex-) wife decided the annual fee didn't fit her budget.

The very helpful callcenter operator searched around for a while, but I guess they don't have 1985 records on-line, so eventually said he's logging a ticket to do research, to add it to my Delta AMEX Gold.

I imagine there's an old guy with a real green eyeshade, in a warehouse with dusty boxes stacked to infinity searching for my old statement records now...

They will back date even if you burned them in the original account?

I wouldn't know, I would never think of not paying. Close an account, yes, but paid off.

If they do add an earlier date, they could change the card to say "Aspirational Member Since..."
