Hello,

Upon logging into my Barclays Reward account today I noticed a rather decent credit line extention. I went from a meek $750 to $2,050. Meaning an increase of $1,300 was given to me sometime within the past two days (as I check my accounts frequently). I opened the card in June of this year so the account is currently five months old.

This is how I've been using the card:

Heavily. Up until recently I've been utilizing this card heavily. understandably so after having such a low limit to begin with. Using the card to pay off bills and utilities as intended, there were times when this card was maxed. I simply didn't have the headroom for maintaining low utility after laying only a couple bills on the card. There was a month or so during this five month time frame when the card actually carried over a near maxed balance. More importantly than trying to have low usage is the fact I've never missed a payment. Sure I've failed to pay-in-full a few times in fact, as I'm typing this, there's currently a balance of $357 and I was still given a CLI.

I think the underlying criteria when being considered for an auto CLI is not so much your credit score, rather, can you pay off debt? Are you punctual in doing so? When "all's said and done" creditors like seeing people carry over balances. This is how they make their money, on all the interest. If you can keep racking up the debt yet have been proven to continue paying interest, then you're a great investment. So they'll keep giving you more money spend.

On the flip side you'll want to ensure all your debts are settled before applying for a loan, credit cards included. So always make sure the debts you're getting yourself into are manageable.

Sorry if it seems as if I ranted. I'm merely voicing my theory on how one might attain an auto CLI. More specifically with Barclays.... still waiting on that Freedom.

Congrats on the CLI! Thanks for the walkthrough on how your usage, that's pretty helpful.

I've yet to receive a CLI on my Barclays Rewards card (or even my Apple Visa for that matter). I've had the card for about 7 months and I've carried heavy balances on it, but I've been punctual with the payments and have PIF multiple times. My guess is that my overall credit was probably a factor in my not receiving a CLI.

Now I've PIF and I'm trying to a new strategy where I just PIF every week, keeping a balance of zero 90% of the time, to see if that triggers a CLI. Only time will tell.

I've had my Barclays card since late April. $1,300 limit. I just reviewed all statements and the most I used in a month was for about $440. One month was zero usage and the other 4 months about a $200 average. My next statement will be on Monday so I'll let you know if any CLI. I doubt it.

I comapred this card to my Chase Freedom card that I also got in April. $2,500 limit. The first mont I had a big purchase to make and I used about $2,250 of the available credit. I paid it in full before next statement date. I've used it sparingly since that first month. $100 or $200 per month. When I viewed my July statement I had gotten a $1,000 CLI.

Based on my usage of the two cards it appears I was given a CLI by Chase Freedom because I had a big charge month that was close to my limit and I paid it in full. I have a Chase checking and Installment loan too so I don't know if that plays a role.

As a test I will use just my Barclays card this month for bills and expenses and get close to my $1,300 limit and then pay it off in full. I'll see if that gets me a CLI a couple of months after. Not that I'm looking for or in need of a CLI but it will be an interesting test.

I'll provide the results.

If the initial CLI is low, you can show payment performance to get CLI. The CLI eventually will get your utilization reduced, which helps your FICO longer term, but for the short term, showing payment activity to the card issuer is your best strategy.

Thank you for the information in regard to how you have handled your account. Please do let me/us know what happens. I will get my sixth statement in about three weeks and will let you know the same!

Congrats! Barclay like most cards likes heavy usage and quick pay downs!
