NFCU Navy Federal Cash Rewards Success

I've been a Navy Federal member for a couple years now. Had a secured credit card with them just to show them that I was a worthy canidate for an unsecured card from them one day. Never missed a payment, in fact paid early, keep my balances pretty good. Saw they were have a special on there cash reward card last month and finally got the courage to give them a call and apply. Was preparing myself for "Sorry sir but blah blah blah". About 3 minutes in to the call I was told that I was approved for $9,500.00. Unbelievable. Didn't want to haggle about a 10k limit, but beggers can't be choosers sometimes. Navy Federal (NFCU) is everything that people say on this forum they are. One of the smartest financial decisions I could have made was to join them. Now mind you my credit isn't where I want it to be yet, and I've had setbacks along the way but if you keep paying on time and keep the balances low you will be rewarded. Another NFCU success story.

Great job! I opened my cashRewards card back in November I believe, with a 10k SL. It's now up to 22k and i've hardly used it yet!
Wait about 4 or 5 months and then keep an eye on this forum. People will post that they have done their quarterly AR, which means it will be time to request a CLI!

Madic: Congratulations on your card..I too am on my way to rebuilding credit and so far the only unsecured card I've been granted was from Discover with a $1800 CL. I want to join NFCU but I am not sure how I can qualify to b a member..my brother was in the Navy but he doesn't bank with them and my nephew is a Marine but hardly am in touch with him since he's always away..do you know of a way I can become a member? So many people say wonders about this CU so I want to join.

If your Brother retired from the Navy then you would be good to go . If not I would send your Nephew an email and ask him. It really would be worth your effort.

Did your secured card through them graduate? I just opened my secured card with them last month.

My kids are both members - one is in the Navy and one is in the National Guard. When they were in boot camp, their financial helpers made them both join NFCU with $5 deposits into a savings account. Told them it was the best bank to be a part of. Both of them have their NFCU savings statements delivered here every month. When I started reading this forum, I was thrilled that I was able to join. Thanks kids!

You my friend are good to go ! Log on to NFCU , go thru the membership process. It will ask for his name,DOB, and his Military ID number. I forget the actual term for it. Just contact your Brother , get the info and enter it. Navy will then verify the info. It will take a few days but you'll be good to go.

Yes, I believe you are correct. Thinking back, my Sister was not a member. She signed up and was then able to sponsor me with her Military ID number and her NFCU membership Access number. So Sylviagarcia, you may have to ask your Brother to spend $5 to open an account. My Sister lives in South Africa and it was no problem for her to do it all online.

Agreed ^^^ Unless the family member is a member of NFCU, you have to call. The membership app asks for family member's NFCU access# or the last 4 of their SSN, if they are members.

Her brother won't have to join if he doesn't want to. She will just have to do app over the phone or at branch. Online is only for sponsors that have a member #. I was able to join online because my father is a member. My mother used her brother who is not a member and she had to join over the phone.

Sylvia you DEFINITELY want to join! Navy Fed was extremely instrumental in my rebuild. I love love love them!!

I didn't graduate to the unsecured card. I just applied seperatly, so now I have a secured and unsecured with them. The cust rep said it's a 50/50 chance that they will approach you about converting to a unsecured. Nothing may be wrong with you per say, just the luck of the draw.
