I'm trying like hell to get DGF's father to get his father to join USAA. Then they can join and when DGF and I get married I can join.

You may have to do like I did, and actually take a laptop to his house!

I signed up my 92 year old grandfather online myself - sitting next to him on the sofa - and I keep track of his credentials, etc. I also helped (and paid) for him to purchase an inexpensive personal property insurance policy. With my grandfather being a member, my father was allowed to join, which will make me formally 'eligible'. I actually got my checking account back when anybody could get a deposit account (and was grandfathered) but I wanted to make sure I would be eligible for insurance someday as well.

My father has yet to buy an insurance policy, so I'm not quite there yet, but at least the framework is set.

Keep in mind that with USAA if the qualifying person dies before joining, you'll be locked out (unless you have another qualifying person). As long as they join before their death, they can be used as a sponsor (even after they pass). It's rather grim to consider, but it's the way USAA is set up.

Okay, dumb question. Why do you like USAA's credit products? Those rates on those cards are much higher than you would get from most of the good CU's and I'm not aware of any great reward programs.

I have never read on here about anyone commenting on USAA besides their secured cards, and that they are not BK friendly.

I'm a member of USAA and get my insurance there. Love them for that. Just not sure why anyone would want their credit cards.

USAA does not offer a "line of credit." They encourage a person to use their credit cards up to $2,500 and apply for loans after that. Now they do have flexibilities in how one can use their credit cards and they allow their use without fees in many cases. As to the rewards on their credit cards it is the redemption side of the equation that is not very market competitive. However, I use their credit cards often like a line of credit and work it so I virtually don't pay fees so there are trade offs. I do not have another lender that can match their flexibility (without fees) and they give me instant credit for electronic transfers to my checking/savings account even though it may be a couple days before the funds come out of the transfer source. Again no other bank I have matches that so ... there is a give and take.

Congratulation CA!!!! I'm a member of USAA through my boyfriend! Didn't have to submit documentation or anything. Now I have full coverage auto insurance for $99 a month! I have over $300 in premium discounts. The last time I applied for a card I had bad stuff on my credit. All 3 are clear now and I want to try again but I'm scared 😂 and I don't want a dang secured card!!!!! All scores are in the 700s now 💃🏽
