Discover CLI Approved: 3rd Statement seems crucial

This is most facinating.

My Discover card was issued 6/25/2018

All the research says wait for 6 months for an auto CLI. But then I see some people trying at 61 days, kinda like AMEX. So I tried on 8/30. Resultenied. Letter came about a week later with the reason:

"INSUFFICIENT EXPERIENCE WITH CURRENT DISCOVER CARD CREDIT LIMIT"

I love how they have to put the reason in all caps. They should put hand claps inbetween each word as well. But I wont dwell on typography for now.

Also, FICO from denial letter was 723 from an 8/5/2018 pull.

So I figure im in the garden why not just be patient and wait for an auto in 6 months. Now Im not known for my patience, and seeing another few posts about waiting for a 3rd statement cut, I started to consider another try. Well my 3rd statement posted just a few days ago. I did have concerns about a recent balance transfer over $1k that just posted to DISCOVER. Maybe they'd deny it saying "rising limit." I know, over thinkin' it again. So I had a credit balance that was a hair over 1/3 of my entire credit limit.

I went for the online increase and I was pleasantly surprised to get the magic slider of love ( I hope thats not vulgar), and they offered $1,500 for an increase. I took it! yay!

I hope there are enough data points here so this post is useful to anyone with similar experience.

Congrats on the nice CLI.

I got shot down for my CapOne CLI request in my 3rd month as well; I'm waiting for 3rd statement to cut as I was told a similar thing by CO (min 3 statements for CLI request to work)

Apparently Discover usually leaves some $ on the table and some folks on this forum have double dipped by calling to take the $ off the table (YMMV).

I think many members have had success with the DD & it certainly does not hurt to ask.

My first auto CLI was 3 days after the 3rd statement closed. I'm expecting another bump at the end of this month as it will be my 6th statement.

Congrats on your cli. There really is no rhyme or reason to how or when they offer cli. Yes, many get cli after 3rd statement but not everybody gets double dip cli, i for one only get AJC specials lol and no more. You also got above aversge sl which usualy sets you up for faster growth than most.

Not sure about subsequent auto luv.. Just saw it after the initial 3 statements + a few days when I got the unsecured card...

Still think the first 3 months is sort of like a probationary period, where hopefully you get the autocli afterwards... Heard a few folks have gotten 500 specials but I do think it might interfere with getting a possible post 3 month Auto-CLI.... Wish more folks would wait out the first 3mo with them and see what happens... And when it comes to secured discovers..... give Disco a year... yes we all know about the early graduations.. and that its very possible esp if your TU score is up near their threshold ... but its a NO AF secured card.... Sit back, relax, garden... Its very likely that it will happen.. but you do have to have your scores moving up..... And you dont have to hit the CLI button every 30 days or so (smallest interval that makes sense because you want a fresh pull before you try to hit it again).... Wish more folks would hold off for 3-6 months between asking.. Do think their system sometimes "thinks" your desprate if you ask too close together, plus its often a waste of paper for the rejection letters.... Also if folks do not know this..its 6 months between CLI reduction/offer requests... and you can often get a 0 on new transactions but you need some time between offers to get it again... Also cannot ask for an apr reduction if your currently on a 0 offer or other promotion untill its over....Patience is kinda important ... Back to the credit is a marathon not a sprint adage....

Also im seeing some more Discover rejections with younger folks with younger credit profiles but a handful of cards (and a few AUs)... If anything.. Discover wants to be used and preferably a daily driver... And even the banks know an AU doesn't really show your responsible w/credit but someone else is!!!!... Not to say being an AU in a sense does make you accountable to the accountholder but not to the bank....

Good points, but I think there is something to the preemptive cli request that makes it bit exciting--for newbies at least and maybe even for those getting back in the game.
