Confused by AMEX Luv Tap

I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure I stiffed Amex for a couple grand a long long (more than 20 years) time ago. In July 2018 I apped and was approved for a BCE w/500 CL. Note: no "steps" email was sent. Okay, I was in the door.

At 61, 91, 151 & 183 days I was denied a CLI. Fair enough, they are slow to forgive. I was resigned to waiting until 12 months was up.

Today, 191 days after opening the account, I get an email saying they've raised my limit to 1k. Yay, I guess.

Question: I'm locked in at 1k now for 180 days?

Scores: EX 721 TU 754 EQ 744

Spend: maybe 2K over the 6 months

No, if it was auto you are still eligble for requesting more.

Yes, lol, thats possible. But you gotta try. I think UncleB had some slow going with Amex due to his past with them but they eventually cave. With my new pl from them, im maxed as they wont give me an increase on any card no matter how hatd i try

The plot thickens: I just checked my Amex CC Offers & I'm pre-qualified for Hilton Honors & SPG. I didn't check all of the others (edit: also approved for the Delta cards, the charge cards, and other Hilton cards. Now leaning towards the Aspire ("$450 bucks! Are you nuts? Yes, quite possibly.") I'm leaning towards taking the Hilton Aspire. Any guesses on the SL? I should start a pool, no?

I burned them for a lot more than that back in 2006. And they still send me notices. I don’t think I’ll be their customer anytime soon.

Many of us have had similar experiences with AMEX. I burned them on a Gold card long ago, back in the 1980s or 1990s. Couldn't get another AMEX card for many years. Even a green AMEX business card had to be guaranteed by my employer, which was rather embarrassing.

Fast forward to 2015, AMEX approves my application for a Hilton Surpass (now Ascend) card, but with only a $1K SL. For years, I couldn't get a CLI. But I used it and paid it off regularly. Eventually my scores improved and I was approved for other AMEX cards with higher limits, and was able to move some SL over to the Hilton card. I remember being surprised when I received my first auto-CLI from AMEX.

Today I appear to have been completely forgiven as I have four AMEX cards with a combined SL on the three revolvers of more than $31K. So while AMEX never forgets, they do eventually forgive you and bring you slowly back into the fold! Time heals everything...

As @AverageJoesCredit mentioned earlier, it's said that auto-CLIs don't reset the six-month clock for CLI requests, but I don't have any personal experience with that (see above link).

In any case congrats on the auto-CLI!
