My Recent Experience with BoA Recon

Hi All,

Been a forum lurker for a few months now and completed my first (successful) recon attempt thanks to the information I gathered from here.

I gave in and applied for the BoA Better Balance Reward Card late last night (its free money if approved when I pay utilities with it) and was given the 30 day message. I called the application status line (877-721-9405 option 3) and found out I was declined. I honestly wasn't surprised, I didn't pre-qualify when I tired to and as of late my credit profile has been very much in flux with a lot of hard pulls and new accounts (see below).

The hard part was waiting until 8am when I could call for a recon. I called the Credit Analyst number as it appeared that users on MyFico had most success using that number (866-811-4108). I got the "Thanks for calling...A credit analyst will assist you shortly" message and after about a 3 minute wait a lady answered and asked for my account number. I explain I do not have an account and that I applied the night before and believe I was declined. I asked if she would be able to pull my application and reconsider the decision. She informed me that she could pull my application and review my credit report with me but she could NOT give a decision on a reconsideration. She very nicely pulled my report and went over it with me and informed me I was declined because of my lack of history. I was surprised by this reasoning. I thanked her for her time and asked if she could connect me to the Recon line and she politely transferred me. However the transfer was to the new applications line so I hung up.

I quickly looked up the App Recon number on this forum and dialed (866-865-7839). A much more upbeat and energetic person answered this call which was calming. This lady seemed very willing to help. I explained that I believed my app had been denied and asked if she would pull my application and reconsider the decision. She said absolutely and asked my personal info and app details. She pulled up the report and explained why I was denied (lack of history) and how she thought that was strange because I had a decent amount of history for my age. She reviewed some of my report details and asked about a personal loan I received last year to help with moving expenses. I explain I had just graduated college and was offered a job I would have to move for. We talked briefly about my education and worked and she then informed me that she "completely disagreed" with the computers decision to decline me and approved me for my new highest limit. She explained that they will expedite a card to my current address. I thanked her for her time and consideration and remarked that it was a very pleasant experience and I was thankful for that.

I hope this helps someone else get an approval on recon as many of the forums here helped me today.

Chronological order of events

1/2014-Walmart upgraded to Walmart Discover >3X CLI (Closed Walmart card to transfer. Was my second oldest credit card)

1/2014 Discover IT 2x CLI Approved SP (Luv button)

1/2014 Closed Capital One Secured (Was oldest credit card)

2/2014 Amex Blue Sky App Approval (Highest limit at the time/$200 in points after $250 Spend/0%APR 15 mos)

2/2014 Chase Freedom Prescreened App Approval (Highest limit at the time/ $200 SC after $500 Spend/0%APR 15 mos)

3/2014 Discover HP 2.5X CLI Approved!! The CSR was extremely helpful and encouraging

3/2014 Apartment Credit Report HP

3/2014 BoA BBR Declined!--> Approval after 2 Recon calls (Now my highest limit card/0%APR 12mos)

EDIT:

To the garden now for at least a year while I use all this new 0%apr and hit my bonus offer spend.

congrats and welcome to the forum ....on1/2014 you Closed your Capital One Secured (Was oldest credit card) how old was that cap1acct? .thanks

Yes! Good Results!

I had to recon my initial denial and the credit analyst (lady) asked a few questions, made note, and less then 5 minutes top, it was approved!!

I respect how well BofA recon department is receptive and reach out without giving you the 3rd degree.

My Cap1 Secured card was 2 years 3 mos old roughly. Walmart Store was 1 year 3 mos.

Congrats on your successful recon! $3k is great, and my first recon call was just like yours and B335i. BOA is great, i've always been getting excellent service from them. You may get a phone call from an analyst like a week from now and they'll ask you how things are w/ your card and will go over the card benefits once again...when i first received the call i thought i was in trouble lol It totally was a nice surprise call from them checking on me.
