Mini app spree

I had been gardening for quite a while, and was planning to continue gardening for however long it takes to get a CFF card.

Last night I decided to just cold-apply for the CFF. Was denied. Called recon this morning, they said it was eligible for reconsideration and just needed to verify my info, so we did that but it still came back denied. Reason was "I have too much credit already". Which doesn't make sense to me since I only have $26k in credit lines (14k of that is with chase) and make $105k per year. But they didn't budge.

So since I already wasted a double HP for nothing, I figured I'd try to knock out some of the non-Chase cards on my wishlist, that I had been holding off on applying for until I got the CFF. Since that's not happening, I went ahead and applied for these two cards, and was inst-approved for both:

Amazon Prime Store Card (Synchrony) - $3,800

REI World Elite Mastercard (US Bank) - $10,500

Good enough for me! Back to the garden I go...

Thanks! Now I'm over 5/24 until May 2021, but oh well. Doesn't sound like Chase was in the mood to give me any love anyways.

I thought about it, but the problem is my CSR is already at the minimum SL ($10k), and the SL on my CFU is already too low for my needs as it is - if I even pulled $1k off of it, the limit would be so low I'd have to make 3 payments every month to keep it from maxing out (I already have to make 2 every month).

Thanks! 2 years ago I would've been happy to even get approved for anything, so I'm pretty happy with a 2-out-of-3 success today!

I'm shocked by the $10.5k SL from US Bank - not only because it's now my highest SL I've ever gotten, but also because US Bank outright denied me for a Cash+ card not that long ago.

Is that true? If so, it might be worth calling them again tomorrow.

But now I'm nervous that with the 2 other new accounts I just added, they might freak out when they see those during the 30-day account review if I do get the CFF. It might be safer for me to just wait until May when I'm back under 5/24, and try again

It's something to think about. Maybe not now given your concerns but perhaps instead at some point down the road when you do feel comfortable.

I don't know what CFF is, but I gather it is a Chase card. Chase isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's like: Different label, same pair of jeans.

USBank, on the other hand, I love. That's because they just approved me for a secured card, which sounds pathetic but that's where I am in my journey right now, so I'll take it. They've been so easy to deal with. I think they are a great bank.

I don't see where there is anything pathetic about holding a secured card, it's a common and useful step taken when someone is serious about trying to rebuild their credit profile.

I don't have any grudge against Chase, they gave me the Freedom Unlimited and Sapphire Reserve last year when I absolutely didn't deserve them. Frankly I was shocked they let me have them; if I were them I wouldn't have approved me, lol. Just a little bummed they didn't give me a 3rd one so I could finally have the coveted "Trifecta", but I'll get over it. I'll try again next summer

That's good you're getting in w/ US Bank, I've heard having solid history with them is really helpful in getting more credit from them. Nothing wrong with a secured card, we all have to start (or restart) somewhere, and that's as good of a place as any to start out! I'm hoping this REI card will be a good foot in the door for me to get their Cash+ card one day, which is arguably one of the better 5% quarterly category cards out there.

Thanks, the_old_curmudgeon! I had a Chase Freedom in the past (Flex? I don't know.) Truly, Chase is a fine bank too - I tend to love whoever is doing business with me at the time. They're all somewhat the same to me but my bias is toward whoever is saying "yes" rather than "no."

And of course you are right - I am simply still embarrassed and a little frustrated at having to start with a secured card, since I've never had one before, and honestly I didn't try for an unsecured, so it was my choice to try for a secured as my first step out of BK. And the facts are, I was turned down by Navy (for having burned them), by SunTrust (because they had a hidden time requirement, meaning not disclosed publicly but I figured it out obliquely, for time elapsed since BK before approving one), so I'm actually thrilled that USBank approved me, even though I don't appreciate them holding my money for the privilege. Oh well, it'll be a stepping stone - and I've already got two unsecured cards right after that, so I'm on my way!
