Navy Federal Strikes Again!

So, there I was just minding my own business and gardening my accounts, then suddenly I received a Google Calendar reminder that today is my 91/3 date with Navy Federal.

I was interested in their More Rewards Amex card when I became of member of the union, but didn't pull the trigger because I was told that it wasn't a good "starter card" with them. After speaking with Customer Service I was encouraged to apply for the Cash Rewards card instead so that's what I did. Boom! Got my first card with Navy.

Fast forward three statements and exactly ninety-two days later. I logged into MyFico to make sure that no inaccuracies were being reported on TU, applied for the More Rewards card and voila!

Here's the blueprint. I established a relationship with NFCU by:

1. Opened Checking & Savings late July

2. Direct Deposit work income
3. Deposited business income (monthly)
4. Approved for Cash Rewards (1k on Aug 4)
5. Approved for Pledge Loan ($500 Aug 4)
6. Paid $475 of Pledge Loan instantly and made $5/mo payments for the loan term.
7. Kept all my credit cards at 0-1% Util.
8. Waited 92 days and 3 statements.
9. Applied for More Rewards via mobile app at 2:27 am and was instantly approved. I highly doubt that time and app method had anything to do with the approval though.
10. Applied for Cash Rewards CLI and received a 1k increase 24 hours later.

I understand that everyone's credit and financial situation is different so you may not have similar success. This is what worked for me so I wanted to share.

I also think it's worth noting that my credit profile is not perfect but I have 0 derogatory items in the last four years. At the time of both approvals my TU was between 650—670, so the decision was clearly based on more than my credit profile. I hope this helps and best of luck to you all on your credit journey.

Congrats! Would be interested in more DPs, for example, if you do direct deposit with NFCU, how big your other card with them is, etc. I have higher scores, but a minimal relationship with NFCU, and they've been lukewarm to me so far.

Sure thing. I set up direct deposit into checking and deposited approx 5K per month for the last three months. The same day I joined, I was approved for my first credit card, the Cash Rewards card for 1K. Also, I signed up for a $500 Pledge Loan for a six month term. Three months later, here we are.
