I was just approved for my AMEX today with a 650 score. When I went to read some threads about the card, I saw many discussing a 60 day CLI (3x) and a 180 day CLI. Can some give me some information about this? I understand the usual score for approval is closer to 700, will that affect my chances for one of these CLIs?

OP, your starting limit is usually an indicator of near-term growth potential. If you got a $500-1000 SL, it'll be awhile before it grows. This is the sign of a borderline approval and it's often said that Amex may want two years or more to be sure you're solid before increasing you. If you got an SL in the $2000 or more range, you're more likely to get CLI approval.

As for your score, a 650 (I'm assuming this is your EX FICO8) indicates the presence of negative information, high utilization, or a mix of the two. Best to concentrate on rectifying that while using and properly maintaining your accounts, and look for a CLI when you are into the 700s. While all profiles are unique, my last two attempts to raise my $1000 Hilton Surpass have been denied and the only reason listed was my score, which Amex quoted as 711. We don't really know where the line is drawn but 720 may be the magic number as I've seen some approvals with the quoted score in the 720s in the last few months.

Amex CLI rules:

You can ask for one 61 days after approval on your first card (and on any additional card as long as no other Amex you own has been increased in the past 181 days); you can get up to 3x your existing limit.

If approved, you must wait 181 days before attempting another CLI

If declined for any reason that is credit-related, you must wait 91 days before asking again

If declined because your timing was off (as in you asked too soon), no clock is reset, you just have to wait the remaining time. For example, if you were declined for credit score, you'd need to wait 91 days before asking. If you accidentally waited 84 days and then asked, you'd get a No but would only have to wait an additional week (which would complete the 91 day wait period for a credit-based denial) and then you could ask again.
