CapOne drinking Disco flavored Koolaid?

I can't figure this one out.

We all know how scatterbrained the Disco approval/CLI process is. We also know that CapOne has become the poster child for tightwad limits and increases, and that conventional behavior for a CLI involves months of heavy spending and payments and a fair dose of hope and prayer.

I just got a CLI on my QS after spending nothing for over a month.

I haven't expected much out of this card since it's a bucketed credit-steps Plat-turned-QS opened in February 2018. Got my PC and steps increases to $500 that year, then a bump to $600 mid-June 2019. Spend on the card since then has been $150-350 per month, PIF all but a couple months, CLIs requested and declined monthly. So last month on the 8th I paid off the $40ish balance and that was it. I didn't use it again, my kids didn't use theirs, nothing. It has sat idle since.

For kicks I requested an increase an hour ago and they granted it, the standard for the day $100 bump but the fact that it was given at all, with no recent spend, surprises me.

Anyhow I just wanted to share the DPs. It's certainly not a CLI to boast about, but the fact that they even gave it with no recent use is curious to say the least.

Grats. I just got that magical $100 increase on my QS1 an hour ago. It's now up to a whopping $700 CL. Next month my QS is eligible so maybe another $100 increase is in order. The grind of these Cap1 bucket cards is real! 😄

I have the same card, I like to refer to it as the "low and slow CC" lol.

That sequence of events does seem strange. What were the reasons given in your last denial letter?

Do you know when their last two account review inquiries were, and in the interval did you have improvements external to CapOne such as utilization or scores?

The denial reasons I've been seeing include "no increase request is available for your account right now", "we are evaluating credit accounts for increases", and the ever-popular "recent spending has been too low".

I don't know when the last reviews were honestly. With such a small limit and usefulness I really didn't care. I've kept this card open because my teenagers are AUs on it and it gives them a MasterCard backup for their AU Amex cards.

Regarding external factors, my scores have been pretty solidly at where they are in my sig since summer, and if anything my aggregate usage is a couple points higher right now from holiday spend - I've been in single digits but am currently about 11%.

Overall this result is pretty counterintuitive.

Lol I'll take your word for that one. My only Citi-backed account is my Home Depot card and I really can't hate as that has grown in two steps this past year from $500 to $10,000 and I'm pretty sure I left money on the table at that.

My Cabela's card became a Capital One account around the time Cabela's got bought out by Bass Pro Shops.

They have this tiered system where you get 2% back on Cabela's and Bass Pro purchases and 1% for everything else.

But if you spend $10k/yr on the card, it's a Silver card and you get 3% at Cabela's and Bass Pro and 1% everywhere else.

Spend $25k/yr and it's a Black card and you get 5% on Cabela's and Bass Pro purchases and 1% elsewhere.

This is my oldest card, opened in October 2015. SL was $500.
I've managed to spend $10k+/year on it for the past 3-4 years to be in the Silver club. You know how hard it is to spend $10k on a $500 card? I pay it off, often to below zero balance, every two weeks when I get paid. Then max it out again before my next paycheck. With all this spend, I would hope they'd give me a CLI, but repeated requests were denied. Last August they finally granted me a $100 bump.

My Cap1 Platinum was opened one month later, in November 2015 (just upgraded to QS last month). It had a SL of $300. I've gotten CLIs every 6-9 months, mostly unrequested. $300-400-1400-2400-3400-4400-4850.

This is a card that only got used when the Cabela's card was maxxed out. Wasn't always PIF because I was committed to PIF the other card so I could run it up some more to get my rewards and reach that $10k mark.

I've about given up on the Cabela's card. I'm getting cards now with better rewards so i'll just use it to get 3% at Cabela's this year. I won't reach the $10k mark, so they'll probably downgrade me from Silver to Classic and that only gets 2%. At that point I plan to have another 2% anywhere card (PenFed PCR), so I won't really need the Cabela's card. But it's my oldest account, so I'll keep it alive by using it at Cabela's (where I do shop regularly). Only thing is that Silver and above cardholders get access to group discounts on hunting trips, which are fairly high-dollar hunts I'd like to go on some time (African plains game, Alaskan bear hunts and cool stuff like that, that a poor boy like me can't do at the drop of the hat, but might save up for every few years).
