Approved For Discover, What’s Next?

I was approved for a Discover It card. The amount is only $500, but I will keep working to get a healthy CLI as soon as possible.

NFCU has the 90/3 rule. Does Discover have something similar?

If you are referring to applying for a new card, it is 1 year from what I've seen. You can apply for and get approved for a 2nd Discover one year from the day of opening the 1st. Same goes for CLI. It appears they may have changed it so you cannot request a CLI for the first 12 months after opening a new card.

After that, I think it is every 30 days you can request a CLI but once approved for 1, there is a 6 month window before the next one. Someone else may have to clarify on those data points, but that is what I remember it being.

The positive about a 12 month window is that it allows me to just garden for a while. The negative is I cannot get one LOL

Congrats on the approval! My experience with Discover is that they give generous CLI's when you keep your utilization down and wait a while between CLI requests. I've never chased the CLIs as regularly as some, but I have taken my CL from $2k to $10.4k with 2 CLI requests over 3 years using a usage-based strategy of "I have kept my utilization down and just made a large purchase and paid it down to zero quickly, so I'll ask for one now". That is not hard data, just my experience. Best of luck growing your Discover!

I agree, I feel from experience that Discover is very much suited for the type of people who swipe a lot, but PIF throughout the month, and don't carry balances. It's funny because I saw an interview with the CEO of Discover who said they specifically target the middle income consumer that carries a balance month to month - however, that's not how I've seen them react to people in actual experience reports on the forums.

@Anonymousthat's really interesting - I know discover has really pushed the 0% APR balance transfer offers so maybe they are targeting the new customer that carries a balance, but yeah, as soon as you are in the door with them, I don't think you should keep that up lol. All research has pointed to the opposite. Sounds like something a CEO would say, though, becuase that's how money is made in this industry.

Welcome to the Disco family Use it and pay it off you may get an auto CLI in 7-9 months. 1 yr before asking for CLI or 2nd card is the norm with Disco.

Correct info on the 12 month window for applying for a new card, also correct on having to wait the 12 months to initiate a request for your first CLI. Once they open the option to request the CLI however, there is no longer a timeframe as to how long you have to wait to request another one, wether they approve you or deny you. There is no 6 month waiting period. I request twice a month sometimes when denied. When they approve me I ask again the day after my next statement closes. Different people use vastly different approaches so you will see widely varying opinions of what makes them tick. CLIs are completely hard to determine from them, and drastically different techniques seem to work for different members so DPs from someone else's success story of a Disco CLI may serve to be completely irrelevant to your own. Congrats on your approval. I find them to have good customer service and they seem to have pretty relevant 5% categories.

As of late, Discover seems to have individuals wait 1 year for a credit limit increase. hopefull soon we will have some members on this forum prove this wrong.
