First Post, Just approved for a Discover at 5k

Glad to be a part of such an informative community!

I've had a Discover it for 13 months, CL 7500 - balance is 350.00

I was going to ask for a CLI, but decided to apply for a 2nd card instead. I was approved at 5k today, w/ only a hard pull to experian.

These are my only two cards. I am an AU on a Sears MC from 1987 (my dad), but it only shows on Experian.

What is my next level in a credit card?

I just bought a home, so my mortgage debt is 350,000 and my salary is 150k. I am rebuilding from a tumble.

My scores are:

EXP: 691

EQ: 623

TU: 662

Congrats! I would go ahead and ask for a CLI on the first card as well. They are SP and it cannot hurt anything. You might just get lucky!

Your next card will largely depend on your spend. What is you largest category of spend, and do you fly or travel a lot? That will dictate a lot about what your strategy should be next next.

I travel often (pre-pandemic) and I am now renovating a home. Those are my 2 major spends. i use discover for gas and groceries.

It appears I'm not AMEX delta ready. Looking forward to your suggestions.

SP is soft pull. Doesn't affect your credit.

Do you have any family with a military connection that can get your foot in the door with Navy Federal Credit Union? Start out slow with checking and savings and see if you're pre-approved for anything using their credit card pre-approval link. Build a relationship with them. Treat them good and they will treat you right. Also try the BB&T pre-approval link if you're in an area serviced by BB&T or Suntrust. (They are merging soon.)

A travel card with lots of flights or (chain) hotel stays really isn't my forte - but there are a lot of guys here that are. If you are renovating a home and you frequently use Lowe's, they have a card that gives you a 5% discount on purchases. It's also a card that is known to grow to very large credit lines quickly. My Mom has one that grew from $300 to $15K in less than a year.

On the CLI on your first Disco, you can request a CLI on the app or online banking portal and it is a soft pull.

If you have a NFCU account, you have struck gold my friend. At one time I had let my account go dormant for a couple of years, and upon asking they re-opened the account under the same account number and everything. I just had to prove that I still qualified for membership. If that doesn't work get back in through your father and start building a relationship with them. It will definitely be worth your while.
