American Express Platinum Credit Card

So today, i decied to pull the trigger on the Amex Platinum card and was approved for it. To my surprise, i have no preset spending limit. I have looked at other forums and from my understanding it's technically a $2500 limit at first... I am not sure how this applies... I have $16000 between 2 other Amex cards, and my utilization rate for all of my cards is less than 1%. Just not sure how this card works. However, I am going to love all the additional perks that it comes with!

The AMEX Platinum is not a credit card. It is a charge card. You have pay off everything charged to the account each month. Every charge card with AMEX has it's own variable soft limit, known as NPSL or No Pre Set Limit. For most fresh AMEX customers that number is usually $2500, but could be a lot of things. Just use the card and you'll be fine, if you go crazy trying to find out what your soft limit is, it will actually reduce your soft limit. If you get an email saying you're close to your soft limit, then call and they will tell you what that limit is. For an established customer the soft limit is usually whatever your average spend has been over the last six months with a multiplier based on the rest of your profile. At least that is my theory.

Congrats on getting the Platinum. Yea, the perks are quite nice.

Those reports of a "soft limit" of $2,500 would be from folks who call AMEX to ask, or use the Check Spending Power button. Everyone who gets the card is told it is NPSL, unless they get the notices of a hard limit due to other issues.

In addition to the NPSL today...over time you may qualify for a Pay Over Time limit which allows you to have every charge over $100 (should you agree) to automatically hit that line of credit, negating charges over $100 to be paid in full...and instead accrue interest and pay a minimum payment. It's not free or low APR but is an option. POT CL's may be offered and will grow with time and payment history.
