Wells Fargo identity issue. UPDATE -- Approved!

I applied for a Wells Fargo credit card looking for a new card with slightly better rewards. I received a letter in the mail to verify my identity by phone. So I call the number, give them my information and they want to send some sort of code. Fine. But they can't send it verbally to my landline. Ok. So I give them my cell. That number isn't approved to send it to either. Now they want me to fax two current bills and a copy of a government I'd. At this point I would have ran but they had already hit my credit with a hard inquiry so I followed through. I sent what was requested even though we live in a paperless world these days. Then I get an email I was denied because they couldn't verify my identity? I have owned my home for 11 years, have 3 major credit cards. 2 bank accounts. A student loan I've had for 13 years. And a credit history that goes back 25 years. A few months ago I was approved by capitol one for 10k in seconds. Any idea why this could be going on with wells Fargo? Is it common?

Wells Fargo has a habit of wanting to send a code to your cellphone to verify your identity... this requires you to use your cellphone number on the application and for you to have service with a well known carrier (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon) some other services work too, but a lot of regional carrier's don't work.

It is possible, that your denial was because of the inability to text you; and an approval could come from them reviewing the documents they asked you to fax.

In the future, if you wish to open an account with Wells Fargo; it tends to go smoother if you sit down with a banker for the account opening/application.

Thank you for all the information. To update, you were correct, once all the information was sent in I was approved. Admittingly, I do like chasing better rewards and bonuses, but in the future I will do some research here and seek advice before I apply blindly for a card. I've learned my lesson. You will get used to the constant requests for codes when using WF for anything. Congrats on the approval @Anonymous

This thread was one of the deciding things that pushed me toward Citi in the debate between DC and WF. I'm glad it worked out for both of us in the end!
