Macy's PreQual -> Denial -> Approval ???

Did the prequalification site, said I was pre-qualified for $2,000 and either amex or store card. Chose the amex, applied, got the code #25 . Called them up, got someone offshore that put me on hold muliple times, said they would need to send me code to my phone via text, put me on hold again, came back and said I would be receiving a letter in 7-10 days. Ultimately I chalked that up to being a denial.

Fast forward a couple weeks I got the letter in the mail. It stated that they needed to verify my identification and if I didn't call them my application would be cancelled within 15 days. I called them back up, got someone who sounded totally miserable but onshore, they said I was approved... but then on further review said I wasn't it was just a pre-approval and it should have been approved. They said they could move forward with the app but I'd receieve a hard pull since I was only pre-approved and it was soft. I said no that was not the case, I did the actual app afte the preapproval and it resulted in a HP. They said I should not get another HP if I already had one.

Next she stated I'll text you a code to your cell to verify you. Ok, I got the text provided the code and the codes that I receieved and read back weren't being accepted. They asked me to verify the very very very small print long application # in the bottom right hand corner of the letter I received. Which they said is an alternative to verifying i'm really me when the other verification fails. I had to take a pic of the thing with my cell phone to zoom it in and read it back. After reading it back she said do you want the amex or reg store care. I said definitely the amex. She said you're approved congrats. you'll get the card in the mail or can go in store and use it with your ID in the meantime.

All in all a terrible lengthy process and alot of work for a Macy's card. I had a Macy's store card a long time ago 10+ years with a very small limit that ended in a charge off. That literally just fell off my credit report last month. That was last derog on my report, and all my scores are now in the 750s after that dropped off. Still waiting for the card it's been a few days, and no alerts on my credit report on new account being opened. I'm not super confident that I'll actually get the card but we'll see. Both reps really made me feel like I somehow inconvienced them by calling in and speaking with them.

Congratulations on your new found liquidity!

Most likely Macy's had to make sure that you were you especially since you had a previous relationship that ended on less than good terms. I am sure that if you had no prior history it would have gone through smoother.
