Capital One Venture X Approved

I had Capital One Pre-Approve me for a Venture X card last night so I went ahead and accepted it.

A yellow box appeared before the Apply button at the end and it said after you click apply, some of your information will need to be verified.

But all they wanted was the front and back of my driver's license, which I uploaded right away.

They approved it with a $30,000 credit limit.

This shocked me because of my bk7 in 2020, which included a burn of Capital One for almost $30,000, among other things.

I now have their Venture X, a Savor for Excellent Credit, and a QuickSilver for Excellent Credit.

The Savor and QS both had $200 SUBs and the Venture X has 75,000 Capital One Miles as the SUB for a $4,000 spend in 90 days. I'm arranging to pay some massive upcoming bills with it. Mint Mobile for an entire extra year (not due until June but can pay any time), 6 months car insurance, my IRS bill, the State tax bill (if any), and some leftover medical bills to mop up from my shoulder surgery last year.

I figured make hay while all these bills come rushing in anyway then just use the card for routine stuff like gas, electric bills (higher than usual due to winter heating), pharmacy, groceries, etc. And $4,000 in 90 days is unfortunately very easy to hit lately.

I thought that the pre-approval with my history with Capital One was some sort of a joke and they'd do a triple pull and go "On second thought, no." but the card was approved very quickly. I do like to travel and the miles and the Global Entry credits and such will be VERY useful for an upcoming trip to the Philippines.

The 10X bonus miles on Capital One Travel sounds pretty sweet. But they rarely have the best prices. That's okay though because they have a Price Match Hotline you can call to tell them about cheaper bookings somewhere else, and they credit you the difference.

At 60 months the reason went from bankruptcy to FICO score, then that was the reason for a while, then they gave me a card.

Chase was less work but required explaining what caused my bankruptcy.

I have this Capital One VX sub and another from Barclay's at the same time.

I just use my own ledger and log each transaction towards a sub under what card it is and how much I have to spend.

It's a little tedious for the large spend ones, but it pays off. $750 worth of miles for $4,000 spend is pretty good.

Big spender!! Congrats! Where's your next vacation gonna be / does having the card change things?

I do a lot of semi-local travel right now and I'm just constantly staying in hotels. I'm planning to use the credits towards those and make heavy use of the Capital One Price Match hotline immediately after to say "Hey this is cheaper on Priceline." or whatever. That also works on flights and hotels. So you get the 10x points and then tell them it's cheaper somewhere else.

I know Chase Travel doesn't price match. I don't think American Express does either. The only weak spot in Capital One is the mile transfer partner list is limited right now, but I've heard rumors that they plan to expand this very soon.

Capital One also lets you bring some guests into their airport lounges, while American Express says everyone has to have a card. Authorized user Platinum cards cost $195 a year, iirc, on top of the very salty $895 you're already paying. This is outrageous. I think Capital One can quickly compete in this area.

But longer term I plan to go to the Philippines with my spouse and mom, those plane tickets and everything will add up.

I'm going to do Global Entry and have the card pay for this too. It's almost trivial to get value out of it that exceeds the annual fee when you have travel expenses piling up.

I had heard that Capital One was forgiving, but this just blows my mind. This takes my limits across the three cards to over $60,000.

Edit: "Spouse and man" should have read "Spouse and mom". LOL

I hope to get back with them this year but I burned them for about 15k in March 2021.

Did not burn AmEx. They always told me no card even when my FICO was over 800 so they weren't a bankruptcy creditor.

AmEx and Citi are known to be two of the hardest to get back in with after you burn them. AmEx is so cautious about bankruptcy that they do not approve you for a minimum of 60 months post discharge even if they were not a bankruptcy creditor. It's more like 10+ years if they were, usually. It's an automatic decline and "bankruptcy" will be on the letter they send, but they do not hard pull so you can just keep applying for the card you want every month until they say okay.

Citi, on the other hand, well, they remember you forever if they lost money in a bankruptcy. It's not completely impossible, but on their non-store branded cards it's almost like "Don't ever darken our doorstep again."

There are stories here and there about maybe 15 or 20 years later, they might let you back in with a Best Buy or a Costco Citi. But don't even count on that.

After a major burn, Capital One is fairly forgiving. They'll usually let you have something 12 months later even if it is just a $500 CL Platinum card, but once you're back in, it's easy to get in their good graces again. 2-4 years past that, you can get their Excellent Credit cards or even a VX at some point.
