I called Chase to see whether or not I could exchange my Chase Freedom for a Chase Sapphire card. The representative said that I couldn't do that, but I could apply for the Chase Sapphire card out right.

Thinking of Chase's 5/24 rule after recently applying for and and getting approved for 7 credit cards (two were Chase's Southwest and Freedom cards) over a 24 month period, I was reluctant to apply.

However, I applied for the card just to see whether or not I would get denied because of their 5/24 rule. After applying, a message came up stating that I didn't qualify for the Sapphire's bonuses, but did I want to continue my application. I clicked yes. I was approved with a 10k initial limit. My current Fico Scores are Equifax 843, TransUnion 835, and Experian 805.

That's a good question. I read on Reddit that Chase is technically no longer using the 5/24 rule anymore.

I was approved for the Sapphire preferred card with an annual fee of $95.

I didn't qualify for the Sapphire preferred's bonus because I had applied for the Southwest card and received 50,000 bonus points a year ago.

I'm thinking part of the reason Chase doesn't want their customers applying for multiple credit cards is to prevent the customer from getting all of those bonuses, and then closing the accounts.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, Chase doesn't include their cards that we applied for and was approved for in their 5/24 rule.

Congratulations on your approval. But, 5/24 gone?... No, it's still very much a thing. 5/24 nuanced rules is more probable, such as meeting certain score and profile thresholds for approval but not bonus eligible because at or above 5/24. This "evolution" of the rule is going to be a deal breaker for a lot of people.

I see I wasn't even remotely clear on intent while mentioning it within my prior comment.

While there can be limitations in the 5/24 rule in regards to opening new accounts, there are certainly limitations on hard inquiries over a rolling 24 month period. Line in the sand denials start to occur once a set number has been reached in casual applications. Are there exceptions? I would say as far as I have experienced, read, and heard from others, no there are not. But, I am open to the concept that maybe - there are rare unicorns out there. I've experienced, and have heard of absurdities occurring before, among situations that would never be considered normal or standard. I just don't count on them as common.

The following quote had me thinking about this, and if it was me knowing this information, I wouldn't have taken the leap to apply for this card casually - only perhaps if it was part of a full on spree. I wouldn't have cared about 5/24 as much, as I would first want to verify those hard inquiries. The hard inquiry worry would/should trump the 5/24 worry as a priority.

"Thinking of Chase's 5/24 rule after recently applying for and and getting approved for 7 credit cards (two were Chase's Southwest and Freedom cards) over a 24 month period, I was reluctant to apply."

I say congratulations on acquiring the card. In this situation, the reward was worth the risk. I myself, wouldn't have attempted it - and that could have been my loss for not even trying. But, that would also be a calculated risk I would be willing to live with.

After speaking to the customer service rep and because they would not allow me to convert my Chase freedom over to the Sapphire preferred, I was testing the waters to see whether or not the 5/24 rule applied. So I guess the 5/24 rule doesn't for me at least.

without the SUB. That may have been the final factor for waiving the 5/24.

And those impressive FICO scores!

I had something similar happen to me as well, except I chose to decline the card. I might try this with a freedom card bc their not once in a lifetime and I do need a catch all card.

I honestly think the continued reporting of that 5.24 rule is loco en la cabeza because most of these banks are on algorithms that customer service doesn't even know how to answer to.

furthermore, every chase card I've ever been approved for including 25k marriot card was when I had 7 new cards in 24 months, but I always had 700 ish scores, maybe higher.

Im thinking of at some point testing the waters with Citi co branded cards after every single inquiry falls off my reports. (im very close with 6 on exp, 3 on eq, and 5 on Tu) all 6 months plus old.

Congratulations on your new found liquidity!

Many people do not understand how 5/24 is applied and as a result have calculation errors. 5/24 only applies when an application is submitted to Chase. Amazon and Southwest have been big about allowing new card members to get around it. It only applies to accounts that are reporting but from all banks. It only applies to the reporting bureau that is looked into. If you are pre-approved then you are allowed to bypass 5/24. The policy is wide and fair but it has plenty of openings to make Chase able to consider the profit twice.
