I recently applied for two American Express cards, each with a $1,000 limit. I was able to get a credit limit increase on one of them, bringing it up to $3,000.

About 8 years ago, I had an Amex account that was charged off, but it has since been paid.

I’m curious—has anyone been able to get higher credit limits with Amex after having a previous charge-off (that was later paid)?

I’m also looking to add a Delta SkyMiles card, but I’d really like to start with a limit higher than $1,000. Would love to hear your experiences!

@Victory24,

Congratulations on your approval. At month 61 post chapter 7 bankruptcy, I was approved the the Amex BCE card with a $1k limit. Over the years it was upgraded to the BCP card with a 40k limit. Now I have 5 Amex cards totaling almost $150k. I've never had to provide tax returns or financial documents, just used my accounts wisely.

From my point of view, you meant the minimal requirement for approval for both your cards. Just you them wisely, pay them on time, and they will grow,

Guyatthebeach

Amex is known to go 3X cli every 6 months. My experience has been, soon after getting a $9000 to $27000 cli, I applied for a new card, I got a $1000 cl. I later realized, I was maxed with amex that month. After 91 days, they went $1000 to $3000.

So, if you want a higher starting limit, wait at least 3 months.

Congratulations as well. Similar experience. Just approved for a Blue Amex to get my foot back in the door after a long time. Just stepped out of the Garden and have re-established service with both Chase and Amex. Chase was generous with a SL at 14K. Amex, only 1K. However, your remarks have brought me peace. It took some time and effort but now proud to say I've re-established relational banking with all of the Banks I let down. Feels good.
