I'm opening my first account at Sam's Club today. Am I right to be under the impression that they pre-qual you at the store? I keep seeing people get approved at the store when they didn't ask for it.

I apped in November after joining SAMs Club, and I requested to app, they didn't prequalify me, I'm happy to say that I was approved for the MasterCard and it has grown substantially over the last 4 months. It's one of my favorite cards and WELL worth the credit pull.

I received a gift card membership for my birthday. Went into Sam's about two weeks ago. While the lady was entering my info into the system, she stated that I was pre-approved for the Sam's Club Mastercard and asked if I wanted to go ahead and apply.

Sams Club does not do the SCT if that is what you referring to. They prequal customers but it is still going to be a HP.

No that's not what I was referring to. I was talking in store opening a membership. Similar to how I opened an account with Wells Fargo, and was told I was approved for their credit card without me asking them to do it. No HP.

I picked up my Sam's Club MasterCard 12 months ago from the customer service desk when I was signing up for a membership. The representative informed me that I was preapproved for the MasterCard for $3800, which I promptly accepted.There was NO hard pull on any of my reports for the credit card. Shortly after receiving the card, I had the limit increased to $15k. I have since ended my membership, but I was allowed to keep the Sam's Club MasterCard. I am not certain if the rewards have been stripped away since ending my membership, but I already have every one of its categories covered by other cards in my possession.

So it appears they do preapprove you when you grab a membership? Hmmm interesting.

I should add that I do already have a WM store card. So, I would assume since they provide a TU score as part of having a WM account, they keep that refreshed in the system. When I joined SAMs, it's likely my preapproval was there automatically.

I joined Sam's yesterday. They asked if I wanted to apply I said no. Then a few minutes later she said I was pre-approved. I said no again. Then she said it is the Mastercard version and starting talking about the 5% gas etc. I know Synch grows so I accepted it. I could only resist so long. 😅 No HP so far, but it was just yesterday. Starting line was 3.5k, called Crédit Solutions it went to 8k. I have other other Synch cards so maybe that is why no HP or maybe it just hasn't shown up yet. I would expect a HP and be pleasantly surprised if it isnt.

If the Groupon promo code was used to begin a Sam's membership, do you still have to go into the store to activate the membership? If so, would you think the pre-approval would be available in that scenario? If no pre-approval is offered would it be possible to request it? My guess is a preapproval request would be treated as an application and thus a HP?

I used a Groupon yesterday. I had to print the Groupon and bring into the store to sign up. That is when I got the preapproval.

You'll probably still have to go into the club to activate your membership. As for the pre-approval, if offered, take it...but Sam's Club MasterCard seems to be one of the hardest Synch cards to get...I didn't app until I was over 720 on TU as I just didn't want the store card...and from the forums, I don't see many others getting approval for much less than a 700 TU score. Something to think about...
