Hi all! It's been past 6 months now since I've had good credit history and I am ready to apply for another great card to build my "thin file." I was contemplating on going with Discover, but decided I would like to try AMEX (and especially because they are backdating). My only problem is trying to figure out what my odds of approval would be to apply for one of their charge cards. AMEX seems like a company where you need superb credit and great income to have one of their cards, for some reason. I know the BCE card everyone likes, but I'm thinking about going for the AMEX Green Card or the main AMEX Gold Card. The PRG's annual fee is a little too much for my liking.

Here are some stats about me:
0.62 AAoA
724 credit score (TU)
2 inquiries (One EX and other TU)
$18,000 annually
19 years old
One (and first) credit account opened May 2014- BOA Cash Rewards Platinum Plus $750 CL - 3% utilization currently

As a side note amex almost exclusively pulls ex so getting an ex fico score just to see where you are would be probably good idea before you app. I don't think requirements are that strict for amex anymore, when i apped for BCP last year i was able to get approved with sub 700 fico. You may not get best terms and initial CL but its doable.

Thank you for the reply! That's my problem, however. I know the first year it's waived and you get all these sign-up bonus points at first, but you have to pay $175 every single year for the rest of your cards lifespan. It feels like a expensive commitment, haha.

The everyday card is 2x groceries 1x everything else with no af thats the important part. Its the only no af card in existance that i know of that can transfer to airline partners.

Amex PRG definitely. UW requirements for the charge cards are around the same and that one comes with the most benefits and a waived AF.

The only real preapproval I've ever gotten was for a crappy Credit One card.

So yes, by judging from everyones opinion, I'll be accepted with 6 months of history for a PRG. If I was to apply.. Say in the middle (or towards the end) of December, would the backdating still apply to me?

I'm still trying to figure out if the AMEX PRG's annual fee is worth it. I know you get 25,000-something bonus points if you spend such and such amount and your first year is waived.. But when would the card's AF equal out with it's features? Basically and inevitably, when would one simply be paying purely $175 a year on a card that is no longer beneficial? Some say they cancel theirs after 2 years due to this?
